Bluetooth 6.0 introduces Channel Sounding, a Bluetooth Low Energy feature that lets two connected devices collect radio measurements for estimating their distance. It is designed to improve on rough signal-strength estimates, but it does not promise one universal accuracy level—and Bluetooth 6.0 compliance alone does not mean a product supports Channel Sounding.

What is Bluetooth Channel Sounding?

Bluetooth Channel Sounding is a feature introduced in Bluetooth Core Specification 6.0. It gives two connected Bluetooth LE devices standardized ways to measure radio characteristics that an application can use to calculate distance. The Bluetooth protocol supplies the measurement data; the application chooses how to turn that data into a distance estimate.

The Bluetooth SIG announced Core 6.0 on 3 September 2024. The specification is adopted. The SIG lists Specification Updates 25800, 27096, 27195, 28108, and 29015 as mandatory for claiming Core 6.0 compliance. See the adopted Core 6.0 specification page for the specification and required updates. The SIG’s Core 6.0 feature overview is explanatory and does not replace or overrule the Core Specification.

How does Channel Sounding estimate distance?

Before ranging, the devices establish an encrypted Bluetooth LE ACL connection. They then exchange channel-sounding packets during scheduled activity. One device takes the Initiator role and the other the Reflector role; either role may be performed by a Central or a Peripheral.

Channel Sounding operates across 72 channels, each 1 MHz wide, and uses its own channel-selection algorithms. It offers two measurement methods:

Phase-Based Ranging (PBR)

PBR measures radio phase across multiple frequencies. Those measurements can help an application estimate distance, while measurements across frequencies and antenna arrays can help it deal with ambiguity and multipath effects.

Round-Trip Timing (RTT)

RTT uses timed exchanges between the devices and known turnaround timing to estimate the signal’s round-trip travel time. An application can use that timing as an input to distance calculation.

Using the methods together

Implementations can use PBR and RTT independently or combine them. Combining methods can provide a way to cross-check measurements, but the specification does not prescribe one universal distance-calculation algorithm. Performance depends on the implementation and conditions, including the environment and the application’s treatment of measurements.

How is Channel Sounding different from RSSI?

Older Bluetooth LE proximity approaches commonly infer distance from received signal strength (RSSI) and path-loss calculations. Signal strength can vary with obstacles, device orientation, surroundings, and other radio conditions, so it is an indirect basis for estimating distance.

Channel Sounding adds phase-based and timing-based measurements rather than relying only on received signal strength. That is a different measurement approach, not a guarantee that every estimate will be exact. To compare particular implementations, look for evidence about measurement method, whether both PBR and RTT are used, tested range and accuracy in the relevant environment, multipath and interference behavior, and power and performance. The SIG feature overview does not provide a like-for-like independent benchmark for ranking products.

Does Channel Sounding guarantee centimeter accuracy?

No universal accuracy figure is guaranteed by the standard. Channel Sounding provides measurements; applications calculate distance, and suitable algorithms depend on the use case. Claims such as “centimeter-level accuracy” should be assessed against the specific product, environment, range, and supporting test evidence rather than treated as a promise for all Bluetooth 6.0 devices.

For example, Samsung Electronics executive Joonsuk Kim told the SIG that Channel Sounding could deliver centimeter-level accuracy for Find My applications and add security for digital keys. That is a vendor statement reproduced by the SIG, not independent test evidence establishing a general result.

What security protections does Channel Sounding provide?

The SIG describes several protocol-level countermeasures and detection signals: combining PBR and RTT, randomizing bit-stream and transmission patterns, offering a shorter-symbol PHY option, and reporting a Normalized Attack Detector Metric (NADM) from the controller. These mechanisms can inform an application’s security design, but they do not establish that every implementation is invulnerable to relay or ranging attacks.

Security depends on the application’s threat model and implementation as well as the protocol. The SIG notes that applications can add safeguards; a digital-key or access-control product should be evaluated on its complete security design, not the presence of Channel Sounding alone.

What could Channel Sounding be used for?

The SIG identifies Find My solutions and digital keys among the intended applications, alongside human-machine interface (HMI) behavior and other connected-device functions. More precise ranging may help a system decide whether an item is nearby or support distance-sensitive interactions. These are use cases, not evidence that any particular phone, tracker, car, or lock includes the feature.

The SIG’s Channel Sounding page displays its estimates of 5.9 billion annual shipments of Bluetooth-enabled devices in 2026 and 100% of new smartphones including Bluetooth technology. These are figures attributed to the SIG; the reviewed page does not provide the methodology behind them. Neither figure establishes how many products implement Channel Sounding.

Will devices from different manufacturers interoperate without one distance algorithm?

The SIG standardizes the Channel Sounding measurement feature, while distance calculation is left to applications. The SIG’s answer is that not having a single standardized algorithm does not itself prevent interoperability of the feature. However, comparable distance results across manufacturers are not guaranteed just because both devices support Channel Sounding: application algorithms and product implementations can differ.

For a working system, check that both endpoints, their controllers and host stacks, and the applications support the required feature and can use the measurements as intended. Compatibility should be confirmed for the actual combination of products and software.

What is the Bluetooth Ranging Service?

The Bluetooth Ranging Service v1.0 was adopted on 12 November 2024. It is a GATT service for configuring ranging parameters and reading Channel Sounding data. Service adoption provides a standard service for those interactions; it does not establish that a specific retail product implements it.

Implementers should consult the adopted Bluetooth Ranging Service v1.0 specification and the Core Specification updates relevant to their compliance claim.

Can you buy a Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding product now?

The SIG’s product-timing page originally expected enabling products such as chips, modules, and stacks in 2024, followed by end-use products such as phones, tags, and fobs starting in 2025. Those were expectations, not confirmation of current availability. The available evidence here does not verify a specific compatible retail product.

Do not assume a Bluetooth tracker, smartphone, digital-key fob, vehicle, or development board supports Channel Sounding based on Bluetooth branding or a Bluetooth 6.0 label alone. Confirm support in the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model, including the required controller, host stack, and application functionality. The SIG’s Channel Sounding feature page describes the capability and intended product areas.

What the Bluetooth 6.0 announcement means

Bluetooth Core 6.0 adds standardized radio-ranging measurements through Channel Sounding, with PBR and RTT as complementary methods. It gives product makers a foundation for distance-aware functions, but does not by itself certify a particular accuracy, application-level security outcome, or retail-product compatibility. Those depend on how the complete device and application implement and use the feature.
