Before starting a survival horror game, learn its controls and settings, then treat ammunition, healing, inventory space, and time as a limited loadout. During play, assess each encounter before committing: fighting may be worthwhile, but stealth, retreat, or a route around an enemy can preserve supplies for a more dangerous obstacle.
What to check before you begin
Learn the game’s controls and tutorial
Open the tutorial or controls menu before relying on any tactic. Learn the actions that matter in that game—such as aiming, dodging, blocking, stealth, healing, or using a special ability—and whether they consume a resource. Tutorials and menus differ by title. KRAFTON’s Callisto Protocol getting-started guide, for example, says its tutorials are available from the main menu and highlights dodging, blocking, and combining melee attacks with the GRP. Those are specific to that game, not genre-wide rules.

Review difficulty and accessibility settings
Check the settings menu before a long session. Choose a challenge level that suits your goals and use available accessibility options for comfort and readability. Whether settings can be changed later varies by game, so check rather than assume. Bethesda advises lowering the difficulty in The Evil Within 2 if its resource and combat pressure becomes too much; KRAFTON also describes adjustable difficulty and accessibility options for The Callisto Protocol.
Set up audio if the game benefits from it
Headphones are optional, not a universal requirement. KRAFTON recommends them for The Callisto Protocol, saying the game was designed for immersive 3D audio. Check the selected game and your platform before buying or changing equipment; a recommendation for one title does not establish a benefit for every horror game.

How to manage scarce supplies during play
Count more than ammunition
Take stock of ammunition, healing items, defensive tools, inventory room, and any crafting or storage system the game provides. Think of each open inventory slot as part of your loadout: an item is useful only if it helps with the next stretch and you have room to carry it.
In Resident Evil 2, PlayStation’s guide notes that storage boxes let players leave behind supplies they are unlikely to need immediately. It also warns that weapon modifications occupy inventory space. An upgrade may improve a weapon, but its value depends on the space it takes and what else you need to carry. These details are specific to that game.

Decide whether a fight is worth its cost
Before firing, ask whether the enemy blocks your objective, whether you have a safe route past it, and what supplies you are likely to spend. Some enemies can be avoided through stealth or by running past; others may make a fight necessary. The answer depends on the encounter and the game’s mechanics.
Sony’s Resident Evil 2 survival tips advise conserving ammunition and describe sneaking or passing certain enemies. Bethesda’s The Evil Within 2 guide recommends stealth, environmental tactics, or retreat when appropriate. As Bethesda puts it, “There’s nothing wrong with knowing when to cut your losses and ditch a fight.” Treat that as advice for judging an encounter, not a guarantee that retreat is always possible.

Use the environment and game-specific systems
Look for traps, hazards, cover, stealth routes, or abilities that let you avoid spending ammunition. In The Evil Within 2, Bethesda describes using traps and stealth, and recommends running when the player is underprepared. In The Callisto Protocol, KRAFTON highlights a distinct combat combination: melee attacks and the GRP. Learn the selected game’s systems instead of carrying tactics from another title into it.
How to explore without wasting time
Search with a purpose
Explore for supplies that support your next objective, and pay attention to clues that help you progress. In The Evil Within 2, the Communicator can help locate resources, and Bethesda recommends revisiting explored areas when needed. In Resident Evil 2, documents may contain progression clues. These are examples of game-specific tools; other games may signal resources differently.

- Cosmic horror that makes you question what's real and what's not; the line between reality and alternate worlds begins to blur.
- True survival horror: scavenge for weapons and supplies in limited quantities and run/hide to survive by any means necessary.
- Examine crime scenes and piece together clues and evidence in order to solve a series of gruesome murders.
- Explore a realistic and gritty apartment building and discover hidden areas and pathways in your search for the truth. Diverse AI: fight or hide against entities that are unpredictable and use your environment to create distractions.
- Gruesome horror around every corner and an unending feeling of tension and helplessness as you explore deeper into the complex.
A practical approach is to check nearby rooms and routes, then compare what you find with what you can carry and what lies ahead. Avoid extending every detour simply because it might contain an item: exploration is useful when its likely benefit justifies the risk and time.
Reassess before returning to an area
Revisit a location when you have a reason—such as a resource lead, a newly accessible route, or a need to prepare for the next objective. If the game provides a map, locator, communicator, or other scouting tool, learn what it actually tracks. Do not assume that a tool in one game will mark the same things in another.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
Choose a strategy that fits the game
When you start a new title, check these mechanics rather than assuming every survival horror game handles scarcity the same way:
- Supply pressure: How scarce are ammunition and healing, and can encounters be avoided? Sony describes ammunition in Resident Evil 2 as finite; Bethesda characterizes resources in The Evil Within 2 as scarce.
- Inventory and storage: What can you carry, how much space do upgrades use, and is there shared storage? PlayStation’s Resident Evil 2 guide discusses storage boxes, inventory pouches, and space used by weapon modifications.
- Stealth and escape: Can you sneak, plan a route around enemies, or disengage? Official advice for Resident Evil 2 and The Evil Within 2 offers examples, but the options depend on the game and encounter.
- Exploration and resupply: Does the game point you toward resources, reward revisits, or offer supplies through optional challenges? The Evil Within 2’s Communicator and supply crates in the VR game The Persistence are distinct examples, not shared genre systems.
- Settings and comfort: Which difficulty and accessibility controls exist, and when can you change them? Check the game itself; The Callisto Protocol and The Evil Within 2 are examples of titles with official guidance on difficulty adjustment.
- Audio and platform features: Does the game use spatial audio or platform-specific features that affect your setup? KRAFTON’s headphone recommendation applies to The Callisto Protocol, not automatically to other titles.
When to pause or change the plan
If tension is making it harder to notice threats or manage supplies, take a break rather than pressing on distracted. KRAFTON’s Callisto Protocol guide recommends breaks and notes that chapter transitions provide places to step away. That is game-specific guidance, not a clinical claim or a feature available in every game.
If resource pressure remains frustrating, use an available difficulty or accessibility setting if it suits your goals. If settings cannot be changed mid-game, the title’s menu or help materials can clarify when an adjustment is possible.
