MakerDAO is now branded as Sky: the same decentralized-finance ecosystem, redesigned around newer names and structures. It still includes DAI, a stablecoin designed to track the US dollar through collateral and governance. USDS is the newer stablecoin, while SKY is the newer governance token; DAI and MKR remain relevant, so the transition is not a simple, completed swap of every old token.
What was MakerDAO?
MakerDAO was the name most people knew for the decentralized-finance protocol that created DAI. Its core system lets users lock approved digital assets as collateral in smart contracts called vaults and generate DAI against them. The protocol’s design relies on collateral requirements, risk settings and governance decisions to support DAI’s target value near one US dollar.
“Stablecoin” describes that target and the mechanism designed to support it; it does not guarantee that DAI’s market price will never move. If collateral value falls or a vault no longer meets protocol requirements, liquidation can put the user’s collateral at risk.

To close the loop: the user repays the DAI according to protocol rules → the collateral can be released.
What changed when MakerDAO became Sky?
In 2024, MakerDAO adopted the Sky identity and introduced USDS and the SKY upgrade path. The change is both a rebrand and a redesign of how the wider ecosystem is described: Sky presents itself as infrastructure that connects USDS liquidity with independent capital allocators, known as Sky Agents. Those agents operate under governance-set risk parameters and deploy liquidity across strategies; protocol surplus is described as helping fund the Sky Savings Rate.

How do DAI, USDS, MKR and SKY differ?

The practical takeaway is to check the current official migration and conversion details before acting. Do not assume that a token’s newer name means an automatic conversion or that the older token has ceased to matter.

What are sUSDS, the Sky Savings Rate and the Dai Savings Rate?
Users who supply USDS to the Sky Savings Module receive sUSDS. It is tied to that module, rather than being simply another name for USDS. The ecosystem also retains the Dai Savings Rate (DSR) alongside the Sky Savings Rate (SSR). The official whitepaper says the two rates can differ, and both are subject to change. A rate mentioned without a date may therefore be out of date; check an official, current source before relying on any yield figure.

Sky governance was active in late September 2026. The official governance portal showed an executive proposal posted on September 24, passed on September 26 and executed on September 28, 2026. Its contents included allocator parameters, a DAO resolution for a real-world-asset line, and proxy spells for ecosystem participants.

That activity shows governance and operational changes continued. It does not, by itself, establish token performance, the quality of the protocol’s finances, or whether a particular strategy is safe. What should users keep in mind?
- Separate the stablecoin’s target from a guarantee. DAI is designed to stay near the US dollar, but market prices can move.
- Understand vault risk. Generating DAI against collateral creates exposure to protocol rules and potential liquidation if collateral value falls.
- Check current token and rate details. Migration information, governance decisions and savings rates can change; verify them with Sky’s official materials before taking action.
- Do not treat a governance update as an investment verdict. A passed proposal says what governance approved, not whether a token will rise or a strategy will perform well.
