Choose an evaporative air cooler if you live somewhere hot and dry, can tolerate added indoor moisture, and can provide a way for air to leave your home. Choose an air conditioner if you need cooling in humid weather, want humidity removed, or need to cool a particular room. “Air cooler” can mean different products; this comparison is about direct evaporative coolers, often called swamp coolers, versus air conditioners.
How an evaporative cooler and an air conditioner differ
Evaporative cooler: cooling through water evaporation
A direct evaporative cooler draws air through water-saturated pads. As water evaporates, it removes heat from the air; the cooled supply air also carries added moisture. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes this as an option for dry climates, not a universal replacement for air conditioning. Its Building America HVAC guide (circa 2011) says: “Evaporative coolers can be an effective and less expensive alternative to compressor-based air conditioners for cooling your home if you live in a dry climate.”
The cooler needs air exchange: it supplies air, and air must be able to leave the home. In the direct-cooling setup described by DOE, a window or vent must be open. Without an outlet, the incoming air cannot circulate as intended, and moisture can build up.
Air conditioner: cooling with humidity removal
An air conditioner removes heat and humidity from the air. That makes it more useful when outdoor air is humid or when you want to limit indoor humidity. DOE says ventilation is not an effective cooling strategy in hot, humid climates; ENERGY STAR likewise explains that air conditioners remove humidity as well as heat.

Which one fits your climate and cooling needs?
| What matters | Evaporative cooler | Air conditioner |
|---|---|---|
| Hot, dry outdoor conditions | Often a good fit if added indoor moisture is acceptable. | Can cool the space; humidity removal may be less central to the decision. |
| Hot, humid outdoor conditions | Usually a poor fit: direct evaporation adds moisture, and DOE says ventilation is not effective cooling in hot, humid climates. | Usually the more suitable option when cooling and humidity removal matter. |
| Indoor humidity preference | Adds moisture to supply air; it does not dehumidify. | Removes humidity as well as heat. |
| Cooling area | Requires airflow through the home and an exit path for air; suitability depends on the system and layout. | A room unit can target a selected room when sized for its area. |
| Air path or installation | Direct systems need air exchange; DOE’s described setup requires an open window or vent. | A room unit needs an appropriate window installation and a good seal. |
| Maintenance | Requires regular reservoir cleaning and draining; schedule and pad compatibility depend on the unit. | Follow the unit’s manufacturer instructions; the cited sources do not set a universal maintenance schedule. |
Climate and humidity are the first decision points. DOE’s HomeCooling101 guidance describes evaporative coolers as suitable where humidity is low. If you are comparing whole-home cooling with a room unit, remember they serve different coverage needs: neither the generic cooler category nor all air conditioners are interchangeable by size or installation.
Energy use and cost: what the published estimates do—and do not—show
DOE’s 2011 HVAC guide estimates that evaporative coolers can use about one-quarter as much energy as central air conditioners and cost about half as much to install. DOE’s HomeCooling101 infographic, circa 2017, gives a similar approximate comparison. These are broad category estimates, not current quotes, device-to-device tests, or a prediction of a particular household’s utility bill. Local climate, system type, usage, energy rates, and installation all affect the result.

For room air conditioners, DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) gives a separate example using 2023 dollars and specified capacity and efficiency assumptions. It estimates annual energy costs of $67 for its ENERGY STAR example and $91 for its less-efficient example; estimated nine-year lifetime energy costs are $480 and $648, respectively. These figures describe that scenario, not typical bills for every room AC. FEMP also notes that local utility incentives may be available; check local eligibility rather than assuming a rebate applies.
How to choose and install a room air conditioner
Match capacity to the room
Use the room’s square footage and the manufacturer’s sizing guidance when selecting capacity. ENERGY STAR warns that an oversized room unit can cool a space before removing enough moisture, leaving it cool but clammy. DOE FEMP also cautions that oversizing can raise purchase cost and energy use and reduce humidity removal through excessive on-off cycling.

Seal the installation
Correct sizing does not make up for a poor installation. ENERGY STAR warns that improper installation can leak as much air as a six-square-inch hole, increasing energy costs and reducing comfort. Follow the unit’s installation instructions and close gaps around the window-mounted unit.
Compare efficiency and local incentives
When comparing room ACs, check current efficiency information and whether the specific product meets relevant ENERGY STAR criteria. Incentives vary by utility and location, so verify current terms with the provider before factoring a rebate into the cost.

What ownership and maintenance involve
DOE says evaporative coolers need regular maintenance to keep the water reservoir clean, and its HomeCooling101 guidance advises regularly cleaning and draining the unit. The exact schedule and replacement-pad fit vary by make and model; use the manufacturer’s instructions and choose only compatible parts. The cited general guidance does not establish one maintenance interval for every cooler.
For either type, product-level comparisons should account for capacity appropriate to the space, certified efficiency, noise, installation requirements, and the system’s intended coverage. The broad energy estimates above should not be treated as a substitute for those model-specific details.
