If possible, test the exact copy in a compatible player; appearance alone cannot prove that it will play reliably.
Inspect the disc for cracks, scratches, and dirt
Look at the reading side in good light. Cracks, deep scratches, heavy fingerprints, and dirt can interfere with playback, according to Sony’s disc troubleshooting guidance and LG’s playback advice. Pass on a disc with a crack or obvious serious damage rather than assuming it can be fixed.
Clean smudges gently
If you see fingerprints or smudges, wipe gently with a soft, lint-free cloth. Panasonic recommends a soft, lint-free cloth, while Sony advises using a soft dry cloth. This may remove dirt; it will not repair a scratch or crack.
Confirm the disc format works with your player
DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray are distinct formats. A Blu-ray disc needs a Blu-ray-capable player, while an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc needs a compatible 4K Blu-ray player; owning a 4K television by itself does not let you play discs. See the BFI Shop’s formats and region codes guide, and check the manual for your exact player, especially if the listing is for a recorded disc or a less common disc type.

Check region compatibility on the exact disc
Standard Blu-ray discs use regions A, B, and C. Sony says the region code appears on the disc or its case, so check the specific edition rather than assuming it will play because it is sold in your country. A Region B Blu-ray, for example, may not play on a Region A player; verify your player’s manual and the code on the item before paying. Sony’s region-code guide also states that Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are region-free. They still require a player that supports Ultra HD Blu-ray. DVD region codes can also affect compatibility, so check the exact player manual and disc information rather than relying on a general region chart.
Ask whether you can test the exact copy
If the seller allows it, try the disc in a player that supports its format and region. Check that it loads and play more than just the opening screen; watch or listen for skips, freezes, or loading failures. A short test is a useful precaution, not proof that every chapter or feature will work or that no fault will appear later.

Verify the edition and what the listing includes
Compare the listing and its photos with the edition you intend to buy. Confirm whether you will receive the case, cover art, inserts, and any extras advertised or important to you. Used-media listings do not have a universal completeness or grading standard established by the sources cited here, so rely on the seller’s description and the exact copy shown.
Read the seller’s return terms before paying
Return windows and remedies depend on the seller and transaction. Check whether you can return or seek a refund if the disc arrives damaged, is missing advertised components, or will not play. Do not assume that every used-media seller offers the same protection.

Compare copies by more than price
If you are choosing between listings for the same title, compare the format and edition, region compatibility, visible condition, whether a playback test is allowed, included components, and return terms. A lower price alone does not establish that a copy is the better buy; its condition, completeness, and available recourse also matter.
