No—not if “closed” means the room is sealed. A direct desert (swamp) cooler needs an exit path for the air it blows into the room, so keep a window or vent open while it runs. It also adds moisture to the air, making it a poor fit for humid conditions. An indirect evaporative cooler works differently, but do not assume a product is indirect just because it is sold as an air cooler.
Why a direct desert cooler needs an opening
A direct evaporative cooler draws outside air through water-saturated pads. As water evaporates, it removes heat from the air and adds moisture; the cooler then blows that air into the space. It is not a refrigerated air conditioner, and the incoming air is not meant to remain trapped in a sealed room.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) explains that air must be able to leave the house, typically through an open window or vent. In a room, the same practical principle applies: provide an effective outlet for the air the cooler supplies. The room can be shut off from the rest of the home if it still has that outlet. DOE does not specify a minimum opening size for a portable room cooler, so use the product’s installation guidance rather than guessing.
How much cooling to expect—and what affects it
DOE’s 2011 HVAC guide describes direct evaporative cooling as capable of reducing incoming air temperature by 15°F to 40°F. That is a general range in the guide, not a guaranteed result for a particular room, climate, or portable model. Actual suitability depends in part on outdoor humidity: DOE says evaporative coolers are suitable for low-humidity areas, and a direct unit adds moisture to the air. The cited guidance does not establish a universal humidity cutoff.

Fine-tune your comfort with three fan speeds, Natural Mode, and Sleep Mode. Quiet 40dB operation, a 12-hour timer, and a child lock provide added peace of mind from day to night
- 【Large Water Tank for All-Day】Portable air conditioners spend less time refilling and more time enjoying cool air. The pull-out water tank lets you refill without lifting the air cooler. Add ice cubes through the top opening anytime for an instant cooling boost. The 1.6-gallon water tank helps reduce refill trips for more uninterrupted cooling
- 【Portable Evaporative Air Cooler】Enjoy cool comfort wherever you need it, without the hassle of lifting a heavy cooler. Four quiet 360° caster wheels and a hidden carry handle let you roll smoothly from room to room, even with a full water tank. Evaporative cooler delivers cool wherever life takes you without interrupting your routine
- 【Easy Operation & Maintenance】Simple maintenance lets your windowless air conditioner deliver fresh, efficient cooling. The entire water tank lifts out for easy sink cleaning, while the removable cooling pad lifts out for easy rinsing. Regular maintenance helps keep airflow fresh for consistent cooling performance over time
Direct, indirect, and refrigerated cooling compared
| Type | How it cools | Moisture in supply air | Room setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct evaporative cooler | Evaporates water through wet pads to cool the air | Adds moisture | Needs an exit path, such as a window or vent, for air to leave |
| Indirect evaporative cooler | Uses an air-to-air heat exchanger | Does not add humidity to the cooled supply air | Follow the specific system’s installation requirements; the cited DOE guidance does not set a universal room-opening rule for every design |
| Refrigerated air conditioner | Uses a refrigerative cooling process rather than direct evaporation | Not characterized by the cited DOE material here | Requirements vary by system; consult its installation instructions |
Some equipment combines indirect and direct stages: the indirect stage cools without adding humidity to the supply air, while the direct stage adds moisture. Check the system design and manufacturer documentation instead of relying on the generic label “air cooler.”

- Consider local humidity. Direct evaporative cooling is best suited to low-humidity areas; added moisture can make it less suitable in humid conditions.
- Plan the airflow route. For a direct unit, identify an outlet path from the room before running it. A window or vent is the DOE’s example; the appropriate arrangement depends on the installation.
- Follow upkeep instructions. DOE advises regular maintenance, including cleaning and draining the cooler. It does not give a universal service interval or pad-replacement schedule, so follow the unit maker’s instructions.
For broad context only, DOE’s 2016 HomeCooling101 says evaporative coolers cost about half as much to install and use about a quarter of the energy of a central air conditioner. Those are approximate category-level comparisons from that dated source, not a current quote or a promise about a specific home or model.
