Eligibility depends on the vehicle, and the feature remains supervised driver assistance—not autonomous driving.
What changed, and when?
Tesla said in its Q4 2025 investor update that it was transitioning access to FSD (Supervised) to monthly subscriptions while sunsetting the upfront payment option. TechCrunch reported on January 14, 2026, that Elon Musk had announced outright sales would stop starting February 14, 2026. That date is historical context; Tesla’s current support page is the better guide to what U.S. customers can buy now.
For historical comparison, TechCrunch reported that the recent U.S. upfront price had been $8,000, while the subscription had fallen to $99 per month in 2024. The $8,000 figure is not a current purchase offer. The same report attributed a figure of 12% of Tesla customers having paid for FSD to CFO Vaibhav Taneja in October 2025. Separately, Tesla’s investor update said FSD (Supervised) subscriptions more than doubled in 2025; it did not define the subscription measurement in the cited passage.
How much does FSD (Supervised) cost now?
Tesla lists the U.S. subscription at $99 USD per month on its current support page, which warns that price and availability may change. Tesla does not offer a current U.S. upfront-purchase price on that page.

The recurring fee is not directly comparable to the historical $8,000 purchase price without considering how long you would use the feature, whether your specific vehicle needs a paid prerequisite upgrade, and the applicable transfer rules. The available figures do not establish a universal break-even point.
Tesla says some customers in certain states receive insurance discounts when using FSD (Supervised), and in some cases the discount can offset the monthly subscription. The discount is conditional; it should not be assumed for every owner or location. Tesla’s investor update also reported that customers in South Korea drove over 1 million kilometers using FSD (Supervised) in one month, without naming the month in the cited passage.

Is your Tesla eligible to subscribe?
Eligibility is vehicle-specific. Tesla says the app will show whether your vehicle can subscribe and whether a paid prerequisite upgrade is required, depending on its configuration and hardware. Tesla’s subscription page says vehicles with FSD computer 3.0 or above can subscribe if FSD has not already been purchased, but the app is the practical check for an individual car.
- Use the Tesla Account that owns the vehicle to subscribe in the app.
- The feature can also be subscribed to from the vehicle touchscreen, or added while ordering a new vehicle.
- The vehicle must complete a software update before the feature becomes available.
How to subscribe or cancel
- Open the Tesla app using the Tesla Account associated with the vehicle.
- Check whether FSD (Supervised) is available for that vehicle and whether the app identifies a required upgrade.
- Subscribe in the app or from the vehicle touchscreen. For a new vehicle, Tesla says the subscription can be added during the order process.
- To stop future billing, cancel at any time. Access remains active until the current billing period ends; Tesla does not prorate or refund the unused portion.
Where is the subscription available?
Tesla’s subscription support page lists the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Croatia. Tesla advises checking the app for other regions. Availability, features, and prices vary by market and vehicle configuration, so the U.S. $99 price should not be assumed elsewhere.

What happens to FSD on a transferred or used Tesla?
Tesla says its FSD transfer program is no longer available. Customers taking delivery of a new Tesla by March 31, 2026, may have qualified under the program. A completed transfer stays with the new vehicle and cannot be reversed.
For a used vehicle, FSD status depends on the previous owner’s arrangement. If the former owner subscribed, the new owner needs their own subscription. If the former owner bought FSD outright and did not transfer it, Tesla says the car receives it.

Does FSD (Supervised) make a Tesla autonomous?
No. Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as an advanced driver-assistance system. The driver must remain fully attentive and ready to take over. Tesla explicitly says the feature does not make the vehicle autonomous; its availability does not remove the driver’s responsibility to supervise the vehicle.
