On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, the supported way to carry game saves to another console is cloud syncing: connect the console to the internet and let the save sync before switching. Sign in on the new console with the account that created the save, then launch the game so it can sync there. Claiming access to a digital game is a separate step; it does not itself back up or restore progress.

First, separate your game access from your saved progress

A game license lets you play; a save contains your progress. Xbox’s August 26, 2026 disc-to-digital announcement says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support claiming a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc and launching the game. The physical disc continues to work as before. The announcement does not describe claiming the entitlement as a save backup or restore, so handle save syncing separately.

Sync an Xbox One or Series X|S save to the cloud

  1. Connect the console holding your save to the internet. Use the profile and account that normally play the game.
  2. Allow the game save to sync. Xbox describes cloud transfer for saves between Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. The cited guidance does not provide a button-by-button manual backup procedure; make sure the current console has had an online connection and time to sync before you switch.
  3. On the destination console, sign in with the same account that created the save.
  4. Launch the game. This lets the destination console retrieve or sync the available save.

Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance describes this cloud transfer for Xbox One and Series X|S saves moving within those console families. It also cautions that features vary by game, so do not assume every title, generation, or edition shares the same save behavior.

Choose a transfer route based on what you need to move

Route What it addresses What you need to know
Cloud sync Save continuity between Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles Connect the old console to the internet and allow syncing; use the account that created the save on the destination. Xbox notes that features vary by game.
Network transfer Game or console content transfer, with save transfer included in some title-specific guidance For The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, CD Projekt Red says players can connect both consoles to the same network and use the system network transfer option as an alternative. This is guidance for that game, not a universal promise for all titles.
USB or external storage Not established by the cited sources as a manual save-file backup for Xbox One or Series X|S Do not rely on a removable drive as a save backup based on these sources. External storage may serve other game-installation or content-transfer purposes, which is a different need.

Check title-specific instructions for special cases

If you are moving The Witcher 3

CD Projekt Red’s Xbox transfer instructions tell players to ensure saved data is uploaded to the cloud before continuing on Xbox Series X|S. They also describe connecting both consoles to the same network and using the system network transfer option. Follow the publisher’s current steps for this title rather than assuming every game offers the same route.

If you are moving between generations or editions

Xbox’s stated cloud-transfer scope is saves created on Xbox One or Series X|S and transferred to those console families. For an Xbox 360 game played through backward compatibility, or when changing generations or game editions, check the instructions for that game. Microsoft’s GDK save-location guidance advises developers to validate access to saved data and related settings on a second console of the same platform generation, underscoring that title implementation matters.

Before you switch: a short checklist

  • Connect the console with your current save to the internet and let the game sync.
  • Make sure you know which account created or uses the save; sign in with that account on the destination console.
  • Launch the game on the destination console to retrieve or sync the save.
  • Check publisher instructions if the game has a specific console-transfer procedure or you are changing generations or editions.
  • Treat claiming a digital game entitlement as a license step, not as a save backup.
