The study reports continuous interaction lasting half an hour and changes in rats’ emotional states under different robot interaction patterns. But the “squeak” in the popular headline is not evidence that the robot learned to vocalize: the paper describes learned movement and interaction, not robot squeaking.
How did the robot learn to interact with rats?
The Nature Machine Intelligence study, published December 5, 2024, describes an autonomous, interactive, rat-like robot designed to engage freely behaving rats. Its learning began with demonstrations by animals. The researchers used those demonstrations to model anatomical structure, dynamic movement, and social interaction, then combined learned behavior patterns with visual perception, target tracking, and behavioral decisions. Read the study in Nature Machine Intelligence.
In practical terms, the robot was not simply playing a prerecorded sequence regardless of what a rat did. The reported system could perceive and track a target and make behavioral decisions while using patterns learned from rat demonstrations. The study says the robot interacted continuously with rats for half an hour and that different robot interaction patterns could modulate rat emotional states. Those are findings reported for this experimental system; they do not establish that it was indistinguishable from a rat or that the effects apply outside the study’s setup.
Did the robot actually learn to squeak?
The evidence described in the 2024 paper concerns learned movement and social interaction; it does not say the robot learned to make rat vocalizations. The word “squeak” comes from Hackaday’s December 9, 2024 headline, “Robot Rodents: How AI Learned To Squeak And Play.” Hackaday calls the robot SMEO, while the scientific paper calls it SMuRo. The available material does not explain the difference in names. Read Hackaday’s account.

Rat vocalizations are a separate subject. A 2023 study on real rats reported that 22 kHz ultrasonic vocalizations were almost exclusively emitted in response to intact squeak playback rather than phase-scrambled playback. That finding helps show why vocal signals need to be interpreted in context; it is not evidence that SMuRo generated squeaks or learned vocal behavior. Read the vocalization study on PubMed Central.
How does this work compare with other robot-rat research?
Several projects explore robot-rat interaction, but their platforms and learning methods should not be conflated. A 2023 paper described a separate small-scale robotic rat that used temporal-difference reinforcement learning to select among six known interaction behaviors. The authors evaluated behavioral similarity and interaction information. That is a different approach from the 2024 system’s learning from animal demonstrations and use of perception with learned interaction patterns. Read the 2023 study in Cyborg and Bionic Systems.

The 2025 article, “Of rats and robots: A mutual learning paradigm,” frames interaction as potentially reciprocal: rat behavior could alter robot signaling in successful trials. It is a distinct line of work and does not establish that the 2024 platform learned mutually with rats. Read the 2025 article in the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior.

What the results do—and do not—show
- They show a research system capable of adaptive interaction: the 2024 study combines learned patterns with perception, tracking, and behavioral decisions rather than describing a robot that only emits a fixed stimulus.
- They report an experimental effect: the researchers say interaction patterns could modulate rats’ emotional states. The result belongs to the reported experimental setup and should not be treated as a general effect across rats or settings.
- They do not establish replacement of animal research: the paper reports a robot-rat interaction study, not proof that this technology can broadly replace animal studies. Hackaday’s discussion of possibly reducing animal testing is prospective commentary, not a demonstrated outcome.
- They do not establish commercial availability: SMuRo/SMEO is described as a research platform, not a product shown to be available for purchase.
