A Nexus 5X that repeatedly restarts or gets stuck at the Google logo may have a hardware problem, but those symptoms alone do not prove the motherboard has failed. Start with the phone’s exact behavior, check whether support coverage may apply, and get a diagnosis before paying for a board replacement or attempting a risky workaround.
What does a Nexus 5X bootloop tell you?
“Bootloop” describes a symptom, not a confirmed cause. Note what the phone actually does: does it restart repeatedly, stop at the Google logo, or fail to power on at all? These are not interchangeable diagnoses, and the symptom by itself does not identify a failed component.
iFixit’s independent troubleshooting guide lists battery, charging, and motherboard problems among possible causes of power or startup trouble. That makes diagnosis important: a phone that will not start is not automatically a phone that needs a new motherboard. No representative failure-rate figure establishes how often Nexus 5X phones bootloop, either.
A 2017 court-filed complaint alleged that the Nexus 5X and several other LG models had a propensity to lock during startup. That is an allegation in a pleading, not a court finding or proof of what is wrong with any particular phone. The complaint also reproduces a January 25, 2016 LG statement about booting problems in the LG G4. LG attributed that G4 issue to loose contact between components and directed G4 owners to a carrier or LG service center for warranty repair; it is not a Nexus 5X diagnosis.

Check support eligibility before opening the phone
For devices and accessories purchased in the United States, Google identifies LG Electronics as the Nexus 5X manufacturer and routes support according to the purchase channel. Its page does not establish current eligibility for a historic bootloop-specific extension, nor does it state current repair prices or turnaround times.

Choose the next step based on diagnosis
If the phone may still be covered
Contact the applicable support channel before disassembly. Describe whether it restarts, stops at the logo, or will not power on, and provide proof of purchase if requested. Ask what diagnosis and repair options are available for your specific device. The published support page does not promise a bootloop-specific remedy.
If power or charging trouble is plausible
Have the battery and charging path assessed rather than presuming board failure. iFixit’s Nexus 5X troubleshooting guide lists these alongside motherboard failure as possible areas to investigate. It is an independent, student-contributed troubleshooting resource, not a definitive diagnosis for an individual phone.

If motherboard failure is confirmed
iFixit documents a Nexus 5X motherboard-replacement procedure. The work involves removing the rear panel and midframe, disconnecting the battery, and removing the motherboard; replacement adhesive is needed for reassembly. This guide explains a procedure, not whether replacement is appropriate or economical in your case.
Before authorizing work, compare a diagnosis and repair quote with the phone’s practical value, and verify the replacement board’s model compatibility, quality, and availability. Current prices and stock are not established here. Professional diagnosis may reduce disassembly risk; a DIY repair requires appropriate skill and tools, and can damage the phone if performed incorrectly.

What a DIY repair requires—and what it cannot do
iFixit’s Nexus 5X resources refer to precision drivers and opening tools. The board-replacement procedure uses opening picks and a spudger, and calls for adhesive during reassembly. Those items are for physically opening and repairing the phone: buying a tool kit does not diagnose or cure a bootloop.
If you proceed, follow the repair guide for the exact model and verify tool and part compatibility before starting. Stop if the phone’s condition, your skill level, or the required parts make the repair uncertain. Do not treat heating the phone or applying a software workaround as an established universal fix: the available evidence does not validate either for all Nexus 5X bootloops. In particular, an iFixit analysis of a boot workaround concerns the different Nexus 6P, not proof that the same approach works on the 5X.
