It uses real wax to diffuse the LEDs, while a heated wick creates the smoke. That last feature means it still carries a fire risk and should not be treated as safe to leave unattended.
What makes this LED candle behave like a real one?
This is a maker project, not a retail model. In a March 15, 2019 Hackaday article, Tom Nardi describes Keith’s build, which was developed over three years. The real-wax shell diffuses light from six RGB LEDs on WS2812B strip, giving the candle a more natural appearance than exposed LEDs.
An Arduino Pro Mini controls the basic electronics. An optional infrared sensor detects a match near the candle to simulate lighting it. A microphone detects someone blowing, which turns the LEDs off. For the smoke effect, a wick infused with vegetable glycerin and aromatic oil is heated by a coil made from 28-gauge wire.
Nardi described ordinary LED candles as giving “a low flickering glow” without the risk of an open flame. Keith’s project goes further in its effects, but its smoke mechanism adds a different hazard. Read the Hackaday account.

Is a smoke-producing LED candle safe to leave unattended?
No. The project uses a heated wire coil to generate smoke, so the candle is not risk-free simply because its light comes from LEDs rather than an open flame. The article explicitly cautions against leaving it unattended. It provides no independently tested safety assessment, temperature limits, or validated operating instructions; do not infer those details from the parts list alone.
