Usually, no—not through U.S. federal deposit or brokerage protections. FDIC insurance does not cover cryptocurrency, nonbank exchange failures, or theft and fraud. SIPC protection is not hack insurance and generally does not cover crypto assets that are not qualifying securities. An exchange may have separate private insurance, but whether it applies to a particular customer or account takeover depends on the policy.
What FDIC insurance does—and does not—cover
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insures eligible deposits held at an insured bank if that bank fails. It does not insure cryptocurrency or assets issued by a nonbank crypto company. The FDIC’s July 28, 2022 fact sheet says deposit insurance also does not protect against theft or fraud, or a nonbank crypto company’s failure, insolvency, or bankruptcy.
That distinction matters when an exchange has a banking relationship. A bank connection does not turn crypto into an insured deposit, and a balance displayed in a nonbank app is not automatically FDIC-insured. Cash and cryptocurrency must be assessed separately: cash may qualify if it is actually held as an eligible deposit at an insured bank, subject to the account’s ownership and structure. Identify the bank and how the deposit is held rather than relying on a general claim that funds are “protected.” The FDIC’s July 29, 2022 advisory told insured banks to monitor whether companies misrepresent the availability of deposit insurance.
Does SIPC cover cryptocurrency or exchange hacks?
No. The Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) addresses certain customer property missing when a SIPC-member broker-dealer fails. It does not guarantee an investment’s value or reimburse losses simply because an account was hacked. SIPC says digital or crypto assets that do not qualify as securities are not protected. See SIPC’s explanation of what it protects.

SIPC protection concerns eligible property at a member broker-dealer in a failure scenario; it is not a general safeguard for balances held at a cryptocurrency exchange.
What an exchange’s private insurance might mean
An exchange or custodian may have a private insurance policy, but the phrase “assets are insured” does not establish that each customer is covered for every kind of loss. The policy’s terms determine the result: who is insured, which assets and wallets are covered, what events trigger coverage, and what exclusions, limits, deductibles, and claims procedures apply.

In particular, a compromise of the exchange’s own systems and a customer’s individual account takeover may be treated differently. Do not assume a policy covers phishing, a stolen password, a SIM swap, or fraud affecting one customer. A reviewed SEC filing cautions that broad crypto-related insurance may not be readily available on commercially reasonable terms; that is company-specific evidence, not a description of every exchange’s coverage. Read the filing.
Compare the protections before relying on a claim
| Protection or claim | What it addresses | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| FDIC deposit insurance | Eligible deposits at an insured bank if that bank fails. FDIC fact sheet. | Coverage for crypto assets, a nonbank exchange’s failure, or theft and fraud. FDIC fact sheet. |
| SIPC protection | Certain missing customer property when a SIPC-member broker-dealer fails. SIPC. | Investment-value protection, hack reimbursement, or protection for crypto assets that do not qualify as securities. SIPC. |
| Exchange or custodian private insurance | Only the events, assets, and insured parties covered by that specific policy. SEC filing example. | That every customer, asset, account takeover, or hack is covered or will be reimbursed. |
How to check an exchange’s insurance claim
- Separate cash from crypto. Identify the legal entity holding each balance; do not treat them as one insured amount.
- For cash, identify the bank and account arrangement. Confirm that the funds are held as an eligible deposit at an insured bank and determine who owns the deposit. A balance shown by a nonbank app is not, by itself, proof of FDIC coverage. FDIC guidance explains the distinction.
- Read the current insurance disclosure and policy summary. Look for the named insured, covered assets and wallets, whether limits are aggregate or per customer, the maximum available amount, exclusions, deductibles, and claims process.
- Ask which incident types qualify. Specifically check whether coverage applies to an exchange-system breach, a customer’s compromised credentials, phishing, SIM swapping, or other individual account takeover.
- Verify broad claims independently. Treat “FDIC insured” language cautiously; the FDIC has warned about misrepresentations of deposit-insurance availability by crypto companies. FDIC advisory.
Scope: U.S. protections
This explanation covers the U.S. federal baseline. It does not establish the rules in other countries, the current policy terms of every exchange, or whether a specific customer’s loss qualifies for reimbursement. For a particular account or claim, check the exact legal entity serving you and its current policy documents.
