To withdraw cash safely while traveling, use an intact ATM in a busy, well-lit, monitored place—ideally inside a bank—inspect it before inserting your card, cover the keypad while entering your PIN, and stop if anyone or anything seems suspicious. Before leaving home, check your card’s fees, PIN rules and overseas access, and make sure you have a separate backup payment method.
Choose a safer ATM
Prefer a machine inside a bank or another busy, well-lit, monitored location. Avoid isolated or poorly lit ATMs when you can. A good location reduces exposure to tampering and distraction, but it cannot guarantee that a machine is safe. The FBI, Croatian government and Global Affairs Canada all recommend choosing busy, well-lit locations.
Inspect the reader and keypad
Before inserting your card, look for a loose, crooked, scratched, damaged or unusually thick card reader or keypad, or parts that appear to have been added. Skimming devices can capture card data, and hidden cameras or keypad overlays may capture a PIN. The FBI notes that devices may also be fitted over or inside a reader, so a normal-looking machine is not proof that it has not been compromised. If anything looks altered, do not use the ATM; tell the operator or local authorities.
Protect your PIN and stay alert
Cover the keypad fully with your hand while entering your PIN. This can block a hidden camera, but does not rule out every way a PIN might be captured. Never tell your PIN to a stranger. If someone interrupts or distracts you and the situation feels suspicious, cancel the transaction and move somewhere safe. The U.S. State Department’s Ireland advisory specifically warns about distraction theft around ATMs; check current travel advice for your own destination rather than assuming the same risk applies everywhere.

What to do if the ATM keeps your card
Contact your card issuer promptly if the machine retains your card. Use the issuer’s app or a phone number from your card or official bank materials, not a number offered by a bystander. Do not accept unsolicited help or enter your PIN again at another person’s request. The FBI and Croatian government advise contacting the issuer when a machine keeps a card.

Carry a second payment method separately from your main card, and take only the cash needed for ordinary expenses rather than carrying a large sum. The U.S. Department of State advises checking bank fees, policies and destination information; the FDIC recommends limiting cash carried and reporting lost or stolen cards promptly. Keep an eye on account activity during travel and review statements afterward; the FDIC’s skimming guidance recommends checking for unauthorized transactions and notifying the bank quickly if you spot one.
Choose local currency only after checking your card’s terms
If an ATM offers to charge you in your home currency or in the local currency, there is no single best choice for every card. The FDIC advises choosing local currency and letting your financial institution convert when your card has no foreign transaction or currency conversion fee. Check your own card’s terms before deciding; fees and conversion arrangements vary.
