Copy personal data rather than the entire profile, then check the new account before removing the old one.
Microsoft’s currently available profile-copy instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, so they support this general workflow but do not verify Windows 7’s exact menus or screen sequence.
Copy files between two profiles on the same PC
- Back up important files first. If possible, make a separate copy on an external drive or another safe location before changing profiles.
- Sign in to a separate administrator account. Do not use the old profile as the account from which you copy. Microsoft’s current guidance creates and signs into a new administrator account before copying; the article is for Windows 10 and Windows 11, not a Windows 7-specific screen guide. - Open the old user folder. In File Explorer, browse to
C:Users<Old_Username>, substituting the old account’s folder name. - Copy personal files to matching folders. Prioritize folders such as Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Music, and Downloads, along with any folders you created. In
C:Users<New_Username>, paste each item into its corresponding destination. - Handle duplicate prompts selectively. If Windows asks whether to replace files, compare the versions or keep both when unsure. Do not choose to replace everything without checking.
- Restart and sign in to the new profile. Open a selection of copied files and confirm that they work before deleting or renaming the old profile.
Avoid exposing hidden or protected operating-system files and avoid copying the entire profile wholesale. The folder-copy workflow transfers personal files; it does not automatically recreate installed applications, credentials, every application setting, or purchases. Some Store apps may require another sign-in, and some applications may need reconfiguration or reinstallation. Email messages and addresses may need to be imported separately: Microsoft’s profile guidance says email stored in an email program must be imported to the new profile separately.
If the files are in Windows.old
If an eligible Windows upgrade created a Windows.old folder, sign in as an administrator and browse to Windows.oldUsers<old user>. Copy the personal folders you need—Microsoft names Documents, Pictures, and Desktop as examples—to a location in the new profile. Windows may ask for administrator credentials or ask you to select Continue. See Microsoft’s Windows.old retrieval instructions.

Microsoft states that the retrieval period is 10 days from the upgrade; most Windows.old contents are automatically deleted after that. This route will not work if a clean installation using installation media formatted the drive, or if Reset this PC was used, because those cases do not create the applicable Windows.old folder. Back up files before an upgrade, reset, or reinstall.
If you have a Backup and Restore (Windows 7) backup
To restore from a Windows 7 backup, connect the backup device, open Control Panel, search for “backup,” select Backup and restore (Windows 7), choose Select another backup to restore files from, and follow the restore wizard. The procedure is described in Microsoft’s guidance for finding lost files after upgrading Windows.

That same guidance notes that after an upgrade from Windows 7, files may be in a disabled Administrator account. If files are missing and this situation may apply, check Computer Management > Local Users and Groups > Users for a disabled Administrator account. This is a recovery possibility after an upgrade, not a routine step when both profile folders are accessible.

For a different computer, use a transfer route such as OneDrive or an external hard drive or network drive. Those are PC-to-PC options, not requirements for copying between profile folders on the same machine. See Microsoft’s guide to moving files to a new Windows PC.
