Tejas is the light fighter in this comparison; the Su-30MKI is a long-range, twin-seat fighter/bomber and air-superiority aircraft; and Rafale is presented by its maker as an omnirole jet built to switch mission types and operate from shore bases or carriers. Those are useful role distinctions, not evidence of an overall combat winner.
At a glance: how the roles differ
| Aircraft | Role and configuration | What stands out in the official descriptions |
|---|---|---|
| Tejas (LCA) | Light, all-weather multirole fighter. The LCA family includes single-seat fighters and twin-seat trainers. | HAL lists close combat, offensive air support, ground attack and ground maritime operations. Mk1A equipment descriptions apply to that variant, not automatically to every LCA. |
| Rafale | Twin-jet fighter, with carrier- and shore-based operation described by Dassault. | Dassault calls it “omnirole,” emphasizing the ability to switch among mission types, including during a sortie. |
| Su-30MKI | Twin-seat, twin-engine, long-range multirole fighter/bomber and air-superiority aircraft. | HAL also lists interceptor and trainer roles, in-flight refuelling, and 12 hard points for guided and unguided weapons. |
The descriptions come from the aircraft makers and, for the Tejas Mk1A order configuration, the Government of India. They are not results from a shared operational evaluation.
Tejas: the light-fighter option
HAL describes Tejas as an all-weather multirole fighter designed for offensive air support, close combat, ground attack and ground maritime operations. The LCA family includes single-seat Air Force and Navy fighters as well as twin-seat trainer versions. HAL’s LCA description identifies Mk1A as the most advanced LCA version and lists AESA radar, an electronic-warfare suite, digital map generation, multifunction displays and other avionics.
What the Mk1A claims mean
A 2023 Government of India release concerning an order for 83 Tejas Mk1A aircraft said the configuration would have updated avionics, AESA radar, an updated electronic-warfare suite and beyond-visual-range missile capability. That is a dated statement about the ordered configuration; it does not establish that every capability was already fielded on every aircraft at that time. See the 2023 Press Information Bureau release.

Rafale: mission flexibility and basing options
Dassault describes Rafale as a twin-jet fighter that can operate from an aircraft carrier or a shore base. The manufacturer’s term “omnirole” refers to performing different mission types and changing mission type during a sortie. This explains Dassault’s emphasis on flexibility; it is not independent proof that Rafale is more capable than the other aircraft in every mission. Read Dassault’s Rafale overview and its explanation of how it describes the aircraft’s mission flexibility.
Dassault also publishes Rafale performance specifications. Those figures are manufacturer specifications for the configurations described on its page, not a common operational test against Indian-operated Tejas or Su-30MKI aircraft. Without matching definitions and conditions for all three, isolated specifications should not be treated as a direct ranking. See Dassault’s specifications and performance data.

Su-30MKI: long-range, twin-seat breadth
HAL characterizes the Su-30MKI as a long-range, twin-seat fighter/bomber and air-superiority aircraft. Its Su-30MKI product description aligns with the broader role list in HAL’s corporate brochure, which calls it a twin-seat, twin-engine supersonic multipurpose aircraft and lists fighter, interceptor, bomber and trainer roles.
The brochure states that the aircraft has in-flight refuelling and 12 hard points for guided and unguided bombs and missiles. That hard-point figure is a manufacturer-published specification; it does not, by itself, tell you the practical weapons load or establish an advantage in combat effectiveness.

What these differences do—and do not—tell you
- For the light-fighter role: Tejas is the clearest fit in these descriptions, with listed air-support, close-combat, ground-attack and maritime tasks.
- For an emphasized long-range, twin-seat fighter/bomber and air-superiority role: HAL presents the Su-30MKI that way, alongside interceptor and trainer roles.
- For mission switching and carrier or shore basing: Dassault emphasizes those features for Rafale; “omnirole” is the manufacturer’s characterization.
- For a performance ranking: these sources do not provide a common operational dataset for combat radius, payload, sensor effectiveness, survivability, availability or combat outcomes.
Accordingly, the descriptions support a comparison of stated roles, seating and basing context—not a definitive claim that one aircraft is best overall. Size, range claims or hard-point count alone cannot settle effectiveness in a particular scenario.
