The quickest way to check is to look through one sunglass lens at a bright LCD screen and slowly rotate the glasses. A distinct change in brightness suggests the lens is polarized. Because screen types vary, an unchanged image does not prove that it is not polarized; confirm with another method if needed.
Try the LCD screen rotation test
- Open a bright, mostly white image on an LCD screen, such as a computer display.
- Hold one sunglass lens between your eyes and the screen, then slowly rotate the glasses.
- Watch for a clear change in brightness. A noticeable darkening or brightening is evidence of polarization.
The effect comes from the interaction between polarized light from the screen and the sunglass lens. It can be weak or absent with some displays; glossy LCDs tend to be more useful than matte screens or OLED displays. This is a quick screening check, not a calibrated measurement. If you see no change, try another LCD before drawing a conclusion. The University of Waterloo educator guide describes a computer-screen polarization experiment, and consumer test guidance notes that screen characteristics affect how obvious the effect is.
Confirm with another polarization check
Compare with a known-polarized lens
Place one lens in front of a second lens that you know is polarized, then rotate one pair relative to the other. When the lenses’ polarizing directions cross, substantially less light should pass through. This comparison can indicate polarization, but it does not test UV protection.
Check reflected glare
Look at glare reflected from water, snow, glass, or a vehicle surface through the sunglasses. Change the angle of your head or the lenses and notice whether the glare changes strongly. That response is consistent with polarization, which reduces glare from reflective surfaces. A weak effect in one setting is not a definitive negative: the amount and angle of reflected light vary. Polarization does not establish UV protection
Polarization and ultraviolet blocking are separate lens properties. Passing any of the checks above tells you about glare-related polarization; none measures how much UVA or UVB reaches your eyes. The FDA treats polarizing and UV-blocking as distinct lens properties, and UV performance depends on lens construction. FDA guidance on sunglasses also cautions that dark tint does not determine UV capability and that a higher price does not guarantee more protection.
For UV protection, look for a clear label stating UV400 or 99–100% UVA and UVB protection. The FDA says sunglasses rated UV400 or “100% UV protection” block more than 99% of UVA and UVB radiation; that figure describes the stated UV category, not the result of a polarization test. If the pair has no trustworthy UV rating, ask an optical shop or eye-care professional whether they can measure its UV transmission with a photometer. The NEI recommends sunglasses marked for 99–100% UVA and UVB protection or UV400. The American Academy of Ophthalmology notes that UV radiation can damage the eye’s surface tissues, cornea, and lens.

What to look for if you replace the pair
Choose based on the protection and use you need, rather than assuming polarization means UV safety:
- UV rating: Look for UV400 or explicit 99–100% UVA/UVB protection.
- Glare reduction: Polarized lenses can be useful around reflective surfaces, such as water or snow.
- Fit and coverage: Choose a fit that limits light entering around the lenses, and consider the activities and conditions in which you will wear them.
If you shop for polarized sunglasses with UV400 protection, check that the product listing explicitly states both properties. A retailer’s wording is a product claim, not an independent test result.
