Yes. Aalto University’s Nokia Design Archive portal has been freely open to the public online since 15 January 2025. It offers a curated selection of design-related material from Nokia Mobile Phones, including sketches, photographs, presentations, interviews, videos, and stories. The portal is a useful starting point, but it is not a complete catalogue of the wider archive, and access to physical materials is handled separately by Aalto University Archives.
What you can see in the online archive
The portal brings together entries related to Nokia Mobile Phones’ design work, with material spanning roughly the mid-1990s through 2017, according to Aalto University’s archive overview. Depending on the entry, visitors may find an object, report, presentation, photograph, drawing, or video, alongside stories about designers and the company’s design work.
Aalto describes the portal as a public research and education resource. Its project was made possible by donations from Microsoft Mobile Oy and designers; that history does not mean Nokia currently operates or owns the archive.
How to navigate the portal
The portal offers several ways to browse rather than a single catalogue view. Its network view groups entries into thematic collections and shows relationships between them. A timeline presents designers chronologically, while stories provide anecdotes, interviews, and career information. Not every designer has an entry.

The portal is a curated selection, not the entire archive
Aalto’s 2025 project account describes more than 700 curated portal entries, more than 20,000 uncurated items, and 959 GB of born-digital files. These figures describe different things: the portal’s selected entries, the broader uncurated holdings, and the volume of digital files. They should not be treated as interchangeable counts of phones or physical objects. The portal’s About page also describes more than 300 designers in its timeline, with around 250 having documented anecdotes, interviews, or other donated data; those are portal figures, not a count of all Nokia designers.
Researchers selected the portal entries, and Aalto cautions that they are not necessarily representative of the thousands of records in the complete uncurated archive. Think of the site as an interpretive route into the material, useful for discovery and context, rather than a complete or statistically representative record of Nokia design. Aalto University’s project description, updated 6 February 2025, explains the broader archive and its scale.

How to search beyond the public portal
If you need fuller coverage than the curated entries provide, Aalto says the uncurated material can be searched through Aalto University Archives. For requests to access physical items, contact the Archives. The online portal is not evidence that the entire collection is downloadable, on display, or available for walk-in viewing.
The material’s broad date range is mid-1990s to 2017 in Aalto’s archive overview. The associated research project describes its focus as Nokia design from 1995 to 2015; those are related but distinct descriptions of scope, not a single exact date range.

Using and attributing archive material
Aalto says the archival material is licensed for research, education, and museum purposes. When the information is available, it requests attribution that includes the designer, design name, year, and Aalto Repository URL. Review the archive’s current use instructions before reproducing material, since viewing an item and republishing it are different uses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the collection was preserved
The archive grew from efforts to save design materials that might otherwise have been lost. Aalto University Magazine’s 14 May 2025 account quotes Anna Valtonen, lead researcher of the Nokia Design Archive project and vice-chancellor of Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, describing the 2016 episode: “The headquarters in Keilaniemi, Espoo, was being cleared out, and Microsoft wanted to get rid of everything.” Aalto Design Historian Kaisu Savola described how the project’s emphasis shifted as researchers examined the material: “When we started the project, the focus was on objects. As we began going through the material, we soon realised that it was about people.” These are attributed reflections on the project’s origins and approach, not a claim that the portal contains every object or person represented in the archive.
