ORBIT is a PlayStation 2 homebrew launcher whose developer announced version 1.0 on October 4, 2026. The developer says it runs on real PS2 hardware, reporting an SCPH-75001 slim as an example, and describes a library interface with console-downloaded covers, spinning 3D save icons, and an achievement workflow that connects to a PC or home server. These are developer-reported features, not independently verified compatibility results.

What ORBIT does

ORBIT is designed to browse and launch PS2 games, PS1 games, and homebrew applications. The developer says version 1.0 loads games with Neutrino and has been run from USB on a real SCPH-75001 slim. That example does not establish compatibility across PS2 models, games, or every loading method.

The library can be displayed as a carousel, grid, or list, with All, PS2, PS1, and Apps filters. For each game, the developer says ORBIT can download cover art directly to USB over HTTPS from the xlenore/ps2-covers project, so the described setup does not require a separate PC cover-pack step.

ORBIT also reads the latest save for each game from a memory card and displays that save’s 3D icon on the game’s library card. The launch announcement reports a steady 60 frames per second and less than 5 ms per frame against a 16.7 ms frame budget; those are the developer’s performance claims, not independent benchmark measurements.

#1 Best Overall
Sony PlayStation 2 Console - Black (Renewed)
  • The Playstation 2 system lets you play original PS1 games as well as the huge selection of PS2 games
  • Includes: Playstation 2 System, 1 Dual Shock 2 Controller, AC Cable, AV Cable
  • Color: Black
  • PlayStation2 is equipped with a 128-bit Emotion Engine processor that enables lightning-fast gameplay and impressive graphics power

What you need to set it up

  • A PlayStation 2 capable of starting homebrew through uLaunchELF or FreeMcBoot.
  • A USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT for the setup described by the developer.
  • Game ISOs placed in a DVD/ directory on the drive.
  • The ORBIT files, including launcher.elf.

How to start ORBIT from USB

  1. Unzip ORBIT onto a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive.
  2. Put game ISO files in the drive’s DVD/ directory.
  3. Start launcher.elf from uLaunchELF, or configure FreeMcBoot to autoboot it.
  4. On first boot, ORBIT reportedly creates a commented config.ini containing its settings.

The developer links a written setup guide and a video from the announcement, but the guide page could not be opened for this article. The steps above reflect the directions in the launch post.

Loading options and network caveat

Besides local USB, the announcement lists games on a Linux home server, an internal HDD using exFAT or HD Loader, MX4SIO, iLink, MMCE, UDPBD, and an inserted disc. It also lists PS1 games through POPStarter and homebrew in APPS/. These are project feature claims; the announcement does not establish compatibility or setup details for every combination of hardware and game.

For network game loading, the developer warns that Neutrino’s UDP transport requires a wired connection at both ends because Wi-Fi packet loss disrupts it. That means the PS2-side and server-side network connections should both use Ethernet for the described path. Local USB use does not require this network setup.

Memory-card choices and per-game settings

For saves, ORBIT reportedly supports a separate virtual memory card for each game, one shared virtual card, or a physical memory card selected per game. The per-game options also include forcing 480p or 1080i and selecting Neutrino compatibility modes.

The developer cautions that the “Native” video mode may produce a black screen on some setups and says the default 480p mode is fine. Treat this as the author’s warning rather than a universal finding; the announcement does not give a list of affected configurations.

How the RetroAchievements feature works

ORBIT’s announced achievement workflow is not described as a standalone PS2 connection to RetroAchievements. The launcher identifies a game using an rcheevos hash, shows achievement progress in a Circle menu, and streams game memory through a small in-game agent to xeRAbora running on a PC or home server on the network. The developer says xeRAbora must be running at home and that real unlocks are still being tested across more games, so the announcement does not establish universal game support.

  • PS2 SLIM Console in Black
  • Power Adapter
  • A/V Composite Cables for connecting to your TV
  • 2 New Wireless Aftermarket Controllers
  • 2 New Controller Receiver Dongles

This approach is distinct from the earlier PC-based PS2 achievement rollout. In a July 22, 2020 forum post, RetroAchievements account Hash Manager said the project would not use RetroArch or RALibretro because “the PS2 cores do not support achievements,” and identified standalone PCSX2 as the planned route. The same thread says the rollout officially started in May 2022. That history provides context for achievement support on the platform; it does not independently validate ORBIT’s real-hardware integration.

In-game menu and language

The developer says the in-game menu opens when you hold L1+L2+R1+R2+START+SELECT. It offers an option to restart back to ORBIT or power off. Spanish and English are listed as available languages, including for this menu.

Is ORBIT a good fit?

  • Consider it if you want a PS2 launcher with multiple library layouts, covers downloaded by the console, or 3D icons from memory-card saves.
  • Check your setup first if you plan to load games over a network, rely on a specific storage method, or need a particular console or game to work. The announcement provides feature claims, not a broad compatibility matrix.
  • For achievements, expect to run xeRAbora on a PC or home server and account for the developer’s caveat that real unlocks are still being tested across more games.

ORBIT here refers to the launcher announced by its developer, not ConsoleMods’ separate “OrbitOPL Toolbox,” a utility for organizing PS2 and PS1 OPL collections.
