Not at the closed branch counter. In the UK, you may still collect a parcel if it has been sent or redirected to a separate collection point that is open and ready to hand it over. For bill payments, Post Office directs customers to Payzone when their local branch is closed. In either case, check the specific location’s services and opening hours before travelling.
Can you collect a parcel when your Post Office is closed?
You cannot collect from a closed Post Office counter. A different collection point is an option only if the carrier or retailer routed or redirected your particular parcel there and its tracking or collection notice confirms it is ready.
Retailers may offer services such as Royal Mail Local Collect or Click & Collect. Royal Mail’s location finder includes Post Office branches, Royal Mail Shops and other locations, but that does not mean every location accepts every carrier’s parcels. A Royal Mail Shop is not a Post Office and should not be assumed to offer Post Office counter services.
Check the parcel and collection location
- Open the carrier’s tracking page or collection notice and confirm the named collection address. Do not choose a nearby outlet just because it handles parcels generally.
- Make sure the tracking status says the parcel is available for collection, rather than still in transit or awaiting delivery.
- Check the opening hours of that exact location, along with any service restrictions. The Post Office branch finder and Royal Mail location tools cover different services.
- Follow the item-specific collection instructions. Depending on the carrier and service, you may need a QR code, PIN, tracking details or identity evidence. If collecting for someone else, check the instructions first.
How long will a missed-delivery item be held?
Post Office’s missed-delivery guidance says Royal Mail and Parcelforce items covered by that guidance are held for 18 days before being returned. This is not a general holding period for parcels handled by other carriers; check the notice for your item.

Where can you pay a bill if your Post Office is shut?
Post Office says: “If it’s closed, you can access bill payment services through Payzone.” Use the Payzone store locator to find a retailer and check the services it offers and its opening hours. A nearby Payzone retailer may not process the particular bill you need to pay.
Check bill coverage, fees and payment methods
Post Office lists energy, council tax, water, housing, rent and other bills among the bill-payment services available through its network. Availability and payment rules depend on the bill and outlet, so verify these details before setting out:

- Whether the retailer accepts your specific bill or bill provider.
- Which payment methods the outlet accepts for that bill. Post Office guidance lists cash, qualifying cheques and cards, subject to restrictions.
- Whether a fee applies. Post Office’s bill-payment guidance, accessed 4 October 2026, says most payments at Post Office branches and Payzone stores have no fee; it states a £2.60 fee for certain Santander bill payments. Check whether that applies to your payment.
- The outlet’s current opening hours and any relevant payment cut-off.
Are benefit and pension payments handled the same way?
No. The Government’s Payment Exception Service is a separate arrangement for people who qualify because they cannot open a bank account; it is not a general alternative for paying household bills. Under GOV.UK guidance current on 4 October 2026, an issued Payment Exception Service payment can be collected at any PayPoint outlet or Post Office during opening hours, and must be collected within 90 days. Check that you are eligible and follow the instructions for your payment.
