Check the museum’s official page for the specific exhibit, then check its visitor information and temporary-closure notices for your visit date. General museum hours do not confirm that every gallery or exhibit is open. Recheck shortly before you leave: museums can change exhibit access at short notice.

Check the exhibit’s own page first

Search the museum’s official website for the exact exhibit name. Look for its scheduled dates, any stated closing date, current status, and whether you need a separate ticket or reservation. Make sure the listing covers the date you plan to visit; an exhibit page without a current status is not confirmation that the exhibit is accessible that day.

The British Museum directs visitors to exhibition pages for exhibition tickets, while its planned gallery closures are also detailed on affected gallery pages. Start with the exhibit listing, then check the relevant room or gallery information: British Museum visitor information.

Check the museum’s visitor and closure notices

Open the museum’s official “Visit,” “Plan your visit,” “Hours,” or “Closures” page. Look for notices about temporary closures, maintenance, installation, special events, unavailable rooms, and last-entry restrictions. Compare these notices with the general opening hours and the exhibit’s dates.

A museum can be open while a particular gallery is not. The British Museum says galleries may close at short notice and that it may not be able to alert visitors in advance. The American Museum of Natural History likewise notes that some exhibitions and amenities may temporarily close for maintenance or events; its hours page is not an exhibit-specific availability guarantee: AMNH hours and temporary hall closures.

Match the notice to your exact visit date

Read the wording and date of any notice carefully. A scheduled exhibition run does not override a newer closure announcement. For example, the Ulster Museum’s visitor page listed “Ashes to Fashion” as temporarily closed even though its advertised run extended to 3 January 2027. That is a time-sensitive example, not a statement of the exhibit’s current status; check the museum’s page for an up-to-date notice: Visit the Ulster Museum.

General pre-visit guidance can help you find official hours and exhibit information, but it is not a live-status feed. Hong Kong’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department advises visitors to check the official website for opening dates and times and read the exhibition introduction before travelling: Tips for Visiting Museums.

Verify tickets and follow up if the status is unclear

Admission to the museum and admission to a particular exhibit may have different booking requirements. Check the specific exhibit’s ticket page and the venue’s entry instructions rather than assuming a general admission ticket covers it. If you already booked, review the museum’s email and ticket terms for change notices.

If an official notice directs ticket holders to check email or contact the museum, follow that instruction. The Ulster Museum’s closure notice, for instance, told pre-booked visitors to check their email for further information. If the official pages conflict or leave the exhibit’s status unclear, use the museum’s own visitor contact details—especially when the exhibit is central to your trip.

Make one last check before leaving

Reopen the exhibit page and closure notices near departure. Online information is the best available check, not a guarantee against a last-minute change. The British Museum explicitly warns that some gallery closures happen at short notice and that advance alerts are not always possible. There is no single cross-museum status service established by these museum sources, so rely on the venue’s own current information.
