Mark Smith’s inductive water-level sensor measures the Rancilio Silvia’s tank without drilling it: a guided float inside the removable tank carries a metal target, while a circuit board mounted outside the tank tracks the float’s position. After calibration, Smith reported measuring the tank’s 1,700 ml range with an error of +5/−7 ml. That is the result of his documented build, not an independently verified specification or a guarantee for other machines.

How the sensor measures water without a tank penetration

The design uses four main parts: a long sensor PCB, a protective cover, a track that guides movement inside the tank, and a float carrying a metal target. The track hangs from an existing cutout in the Rancilio Silvia tank. The PCB and cover sit outside the tank, so the assembly straddles the tank wall without a hole through it.

As the water level changes, the float moves along the track. Its metal target passes through the field generated by the PCB coils and affects the coils’ signals. A Microchip LX3302A reads the voltages associated with two coils and calculates the float’s position. Smith describes the ratio of the receive-coil voltages as tracking the float’s linear position over its guided travel.

The position data can be sent to a Raspberry Pi or microcontroller over SENT. Smith integrated the sensor with a Raspberry Pi Zero-based Espresso Connect setup, addressing his concern that he might start a shot without checking whether the tank was nearly empty.

What Smith built and how it fits

Smith’s prototype uses a 3D-printed PETG float with copper tape on both sides and small metal weights. Food-safe RTV silicone retains the weights, and a thin coat of food-safe epoxy seals the float. These are materials used in his particular build; the description does not establish food-contact certification for other products sold under similar labels.

The PCB, cover, and track are retained with an M3×5 mm flat-head screw. A small piece of tape helps keep the sensor vertical while the tank is reinserted. Smith notes that a production version could use thin stainless steel and a stainless slug, potentially with thicker walls that would avoid the epoxy coating. That is a design suggestion, not a tested alternative reported in the project.

Calibration is part of the design

The reported performance depends on calibration in the installed machine. Smith’s workflow includes an IPCE/LXM9518 programmer and data collected at multiple target gaps. He describes three stages:

  1. Correct the gross offset. Adjust the initial position offset so the sensor’s readings align with the float’s actual position.
  2. Program dynamic calibration parameters. Use the calibration data to configure the LX3302A.
  3. Calibrate with the sensor installed. Draw water from a full tank to collect velocity-calibration data and compensate for residual differences involving the sensor, tank, and nearby metal in the machine.

For his calibrated sensor, Smith reported a 1,700 ml measurement range with less than 12 ml error, expressed as +5/−7 ml. This is his published result from 2022, not a third-party test or a specification guaranteed by Microchip. In a demonstration, a nominal 50 ml espresso dose produced a 52 ml extraction; that example likewise describes the project, not universal dosing accuracy.

How this compares with other sensor ideas

Hackaday commenters asked about ready-made sensors that stick to the outside of a plastic tank and suggested capacitive sensing. Those comments do not provide model details or controlled comparisons, so they cannot establish that either approach is more accurate, easier to install, or better suited to the Silvia.

Approach What the documentation establishes
Smith’s inductive build Designed for the Rancilio Silvia; uses an internal guided float and metal target, with the PCB outside the tank. Requires calibration. Smith reports the calibrated result above.
Ready-made external level sensor Raised in reader comments; specific models, fit to the Silvia, calibration effort, and comparable accuracy are not stated.
Capacitive sensing Suggested in reader comments; no build details or comparative test results are stated.

For a practical comparison, check whether a design requires modifying the tank, whether any part contacts the water, whether it needs moving parts, how it fits the Silvia’s tank, what calibration it needs, what accuracy evidence exists, and whether it can communicate with the machine’s controller.

What the project does—and does not—claim

The build is a way to monitor tank level without drilling the documented Rancilio Silvia tank, and its output can support feedback such as estimating a chosen dispense volume. It is not documented as a universal drop-in sensor for espresso machines. Compatibility with other Silvia generations or other tank shapes is not established here.

Smith’s project article, published March 5, 2022, documents the design and calibration. Hackaday covered it on March 8, 2022. Microchip identifies the LX3302A as an “Inductive Position Sensor Interface IC” and listed it as “In Production” on its product page when consulted October 4, 2026; component status and stock can change. Smith summed up the convenience this way: “Now I never have to remember to check the water, the machine does it for me.”
