Wash your reusable water bottle and its removable parts regularly with soap and water, scrub areas you cannot easily reach, rinse well, and let every part dry fully before putting it back together or storing it. Check the bottle maker’s care instructions before using a dishwasher or any stronger cleaning method: materials, finishes, lids, straws, and seals can have different limits.
How often should you clean a reusable water bottle?
Clean it regularly, especially the parts that touch your mouth and hands. There is no single evidence-based schedule that fits every bottle and use pattern: an Associated Press report from 2025 notes that experts differ on exact timing. Choose a routine you can keep, and clean the bottle when it is visibly dirty or has an unpleasant smell or residue.
Mouths and hands can transfer germs to bottle surfaces and parts, the AP report explains. Regular washing helps remove grime and most germs from surfaces.
How to wash a reusable water bottle
- Check the care instructions. Look for the maker’s directions for the bottle, lid, straw, and seals. CDC advises following manufacturer recommendations for cleaning, maintaining, and storing devices that use water: Preventing Drinking Water-Related Illnesses.
- Empty and take it apart. Rinse out any remaining drink. Remove the lid, straw, gasket, or other detachable parts if the instructions allow it. Taking removable items apart helps expose surfaces that can otherwise be missed; CDC gives this advice for infant feeding items, not specifically for reusable bottles.
- Wash with soap and water. Clean the bottle interior, rim, lid, and removable parts. Scrub reachable surfaces; a narrow bottle brush can help reach the interior, but it is optional. CDC says that in most situations, cleaning with soap and water removes most germs from surfaces: Cleaning and Disinfecting.
- Rinse thoroughly. Rinse away soap and loosened residue from the bottle and each part.
- Air-dry completely. Let the bottle and pieces dry fully before reassembling or storing them. CDC specifically gives thorough air-drying instructions for infant feeding items; for a water bottle, follow the maker’s directions as well.
Can you put a reusable bottle in the dishwasher?
Only if the manufacturer says that the specific bottle and its parts are dishwasher-safe. Suitability can differ between the bottle body, lid, straw, seals, insulation, and printed or coated finishes. Check the product instructions rather than assuming that a dishwasher-safe bottle body means every component can go in the machine.

Should you disinfect a reusable water bottle?
Routine washing is not the same as sanitizing or disinfecting. CDC’s general household-surface guidance says soap-and-water cleaning removes most germs in most situations; it describes disinfection as appropriate when someone is sick or has recently visited. That guidance is about surfaces, not a bottle-specific chemical treatment, so do not use bleach, boiling, or a dishwasher sanitizing cycle unless the bottle maker says the method is suitable for your product.
Care details that depend on the bottle
When comparing care instructions for different bottle designs, check whether the material and finish tolerate the suggested method, whether the body and lid are dishwasher-safe, whether straws or seals can be removed, and whether all parts can dry easily. Follow the maker’s guidance for the exact bottle rather than applying one method to every reusable bottle.
