If your actions and what you saw were out of sync, movements that depend on visual feedback could feel harder to correct. Research on cursor-reaching tasks shows that adding delay to visual feedback can slow target-reaching, but it does not establish that every part of everyday life would lag in the same way. The comparison is useful as an analogy—not a literal prediction of what would happen to a person.

What “lag in real life” would mean

In a game, lag commonly means that an input and its visible result are separated by a delay. Applied to real life, the analogy is that you move, but what you see does not reflect that movement immediately. The practical question is how a delay in visual feedback might affect actions that rely on seeing what happened and adjusting.

Ordinary movement already involves processing time: visual information about movement takes time to influence action. A 2023 study describes this visual sensorimotor delay as about 100 milliseconds. That figure describes the process discussed in that study; it is not a universal reaction time or a precise forecast for an imagined experience of real-life lag. Experimental Brain Research (2023)

How added visual delay could affect movement

Corrections may take longer

In a cursor-reaching experiment, participants took longer to reach targets when additional delay was introduced into visual feedback. If the view of a movement arrives late, it gives you less timely information for making a correction. This finding applies to the study’s goal-directed cursor task; it does not show that a person would necessarily stumble, lose control, or experience the same effect during every activity.

Recent feedback needs to stay available

The researchers concluded that arm movements benefit from continuous access to recent visual feedback. Their findings also indicate that how much of the time the cursor remained visible mattered more than its update rate alone. In other words, feedback is not just about how frequently a display refreshes: whether recent information is available throughout the movement matters too. Experimental Brain Research (2023)

Why surprise and predictability matter

A delay that appears unexpectedly is not the same as one that has become predictable. A 2016 human-computer interaction study, using auditory categorization tasks, found that unexpected delayed feedback activated brain regions associated with orienting and action control; activation increased with delay duration. As frequent delays became expected, activity in the observed network diminished. Rare omissions of feedback people had come to expect reduced its trustworthiness. PubMed (2016)

This is evidence about responses in controlled auditory interactions, not proof that people adapt to every delay in the same way during daily life. It does, however, show why a sudden interruption and a consistent, anticipated delay should not be treated as equivalent.

Your nervous system does not wait only for vision

It would be misleading to imagine the body as a computer that waits for a visual update before it can respond. The nervous system uses feedback through different channels and on different timescales. In an object-manipulation experiment, researchers observed coordinated target-directed responses in shoulder and hand muscles at approximately 60 milliseconds after a perturbation. That timing belongs to the study’s specific experiment, not to all bodily responses. eNeuro (2016)

What the evidence does—and does not—tell us

  • Shown in specific experiments: adding delay to visual feedback can slow goal-directed cursor reaching, and continuous access to recent visual information can benefit the movement studied.
  • Shown in a different interaction task: unexpected delayed feedback and predictable delays can produce different patterns of brain activity and trustworthiness.
  • Also shown in a separate movement experiment: coordinated muscle responses can occur rapidly after a perturbation, so not every response depends on visual confirmation.
  • Not established: a universal real-life lag duration, a single threshold at which normal activity becomes impossible, or a definite effect on walking, speaking, eating, or driving.
