What makes a game a Minecraft alternative?
Minecraft brings together two different draws: open-ended construction and survival play built around gathering resources, crafting, and facing danger. Its official overview sums up that range as “Create. Explore. Survive.” (Minecraft’s official overview). An alternative does not have to copy Minecraft’s block-based 3D world to suit you; it needs to preserve the parts you care about.
When comparing games, consider the perspective and building style, how much combat and exploration matter, the pressure of survival, progression, multiplayer needs, and whether the game supports your platform. The options below overlap with Minecraft in different ways rather than offering a like-for-like replacement.
Terraria: best fit for exploration, crafting, and building in 2D
Terraria’s official description emphasizes digging, fighting, exploring, and building. It also describes gathering resources, crafting, surviving, and making structures that range from homes and fortresses to cities and machinery (Terraria on Steam). That makes it a strong fit if you want construction to sit alongside exploration and survival rather than play as a purely creative mode.

What feels different

Valheim: consider it for detailed building in a Viking survival setting
Valheim’s official site describes a survival game with crafting and a detailed building system (Valheim’s official site). The setting is Viking-themed, which gives it a different identity from Minecraft’s open-ended sandbox. It may suit you if building and crafting are important, but you also want survival play in a distinct setting.

The official announcement set Valheim’s 1.0 release for 9 September 2026 and said full crossplay would be available (Valheim 1.0 release announcement). That announcement states a planned date; it does not by itself confirm that the release occurred. Check the game’s current official storefront listing for release status, supported platforms, and crossplay details before buying or planning a group game.
