Cloudflare’s LavaRand turns a wall of moving lava lamps into an extra source of entropy for cryptographic systems. The lamps do not generate secure random numbers on their own: a camera, image-processing and mixing steps, other system entropy, and a cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generator (CSPRNG) are all part of the story.
What makes LavaRand a random-number generator?
The name refers to a Cloudflare system that uses images of lava lamps as one input to a larger randomness pipeline. The lamps’ unpredictable movement is measured by a camera; the resulting data is mixed with other entropy and used to support a CSPRNG.
That distinction matters. Physical measurements can supply unpredictable input, while a CSPRNG is a deterministic algorithm: once seeded, it efficiently expands a relatively small amount of input into a large amount of output. Its security depends on the seed being unpredictable. Cloudflare’s Joshua Liebow-Feeser summarized the system in a November 6, 2017 technical post: “In short, LavaRand is a system that provides an additional entropy source to our production machines.” Cloudflare’s technical explanation
How Cloudflare described the original system
1. A camera observes the lamps
In the 2017 account, a camera pointed at the lava-lamp wall in Cloudflare’s San Francisco lobby captures changing imagery. The company described two contributions: changes in the lamp patterns and noise in the camera’s photoreceptors.

- Beautiful Motion Lamp: Bring the relaxing colors of the Aurora Borealis into your life. Watch the colorful purple lava drift to the top of the lamp before it cycles back to the bottom through the teal liquid in a soothing, calming flow.
- Easy to Operate: After plugging in your lamp, wait 2-3 hours for your wax to begin flowing. For optimal performance, run your lamp no more than 10 hours at a time and allow it to cool completely before handling.
- Perfect Size for Gifting: This LAVA Lamp stands 14.5" tall, ideal for a coffee table, bookshelf, or desk. Give it as a gift or use it as a calming accent in any room.
- Top Quality: We make LAVA Lamps like we always have-- with top-quality materials and safety in mind. Make sure to read the included handbook and follow the tips to help your LAVA Lamp last a lifetime. Uses 1 S11 E17 25-watt bulb (included)
- The Original LAVA Lamp: Since 1965, LAVA has made this classic mezmerizing motion lamp a household name. Whether you are 10 or 60, in college or home decorating, there is a LAVA Lamp to help you set the mood of your life
2. The imagery is combined with other entropy
An office server mixes the camera contribution with its own entropy. In the described production flow, a data-center service then combines that feed with entropy available locally. So the image is not treated as a complete source of security by itself.
3. Production machines add the feed to their entropy system
Cloudflare’s 2017 description says that, after boot, production machines requested a fixed-size “beacon” over TLS and mixed it into their entropy systems. This is a dated description of the design, not confirmation of the exact configuration in use today.

Why add lava lamps to a cryptographic system?
The purpose is defense in depth. If a local entropy source or a CSPRNG has a flaw, an additional source may make it harder for an attacker to predict the output. But the physical display is not a security guarantee: the camera, data feed, office server, and production service also matter. Cloudflare’s 2017 account discusses attacks against those components and identifies compromise of the production service that produces the final feed as critical in its described model.
Cloudflare has since described a broader set of sources. Its March 2024 account discusses image processing, hashing, and combining source data with a prior seed and local system entropy to derive a new CSPRNG seed. In March 2025, the company reported adding 50 wave machines at its Lisbon office, alongside sources it had described in San Francisco, Austin, and London. These are dated descriptions from Cloudflare; they do not establish the exact installation inventory or configuration as of October 2026. Cloudflare’s 2024 account · Cloudflare’s March 2025 update

What does “30,000 bits” mean?
Cloudflare’s 2017 technical post gives a hypothetical estimate: if an image were 100 by 100 pixels and each pixel carried one bit of uncertainty in each of its three color channels, that would amount to 100 × 100 × 3 = 30,000 bits. It is an illustration based on stated assumptions—not a measured entropy rate, benchmark, or claim about the system’s actual output. Cloudflare’s 2017 technical post
Can a household lava lamp generate secure random numbers?
No. A decorative lamp can demonstrate the idea of changing physical patterns, but it does not reproduce Cloudflare’s camera feed, entropy mixing, or production infrastructure. Buying a lamp does not give you LavaRand or a cryptographic random-number generator; treat it as a visual prop, not a security device.

What the published accounts do—and do not—establish
Cloudflare’s posts explain the system as the company described it at particular dates. The accounts cited here are not independent security audits, and they do not report independent tests of the randomness output. They also do not establish the system’s precise present-day configuration. The strongest supported takeaway is narrower: LavaRand uses physical imagery as an additional entropy input within a larger cryptographic system.
The playful phrase “The Grooviest Random Number Generator Ever” comes from a January 4, 2018 Hackaday article about the project. Hackaday’s article
