The project later fell apart, according to a 2020 retrospective, which reported that at least some refunds were made. Its core idea—using directed airflow instead of a canopy—ran into practical challenges involving power, coverage, noise and the effect on people nearby.
What the Air Umbrella was supposed to do
The campaign pitched an “invisible umbrella”: a handheld device that would use airflow to push raindrops away rather than block them with fabric. Its creator described it as “This is a real“invisible umbrella”, which takes advantage of the air flow as shelter from the rain.” The Kickstarter campaign ran from September 24 to October 24, 2014, and raised $102,240 from 825 backers against a $10,000 goal.
Those figures show that the campaign exceeded its fundraising target; they do not show that the device was manufactured or delivered. The available accounts do not establish how many backers, if any, received a finished product.
Why the concept was difficult to make practical
A conventional umbrella blocks rain with a canopy. The Air Umbrella had to move droplets out of the protected area with air, while remaining light and comfortable to hold, quiet enough to use, and powered for a useful length of time. Contemporary coverage raised concerns about that combination, rather than reporting a standardized product test.

Runtime, weight and charging
The campaign-era creator FAQ claimed battery life of about 30 minutes. That was a creator estimate, not independently verified runtime from a production device. The Washington Post also highlighted concerns about weight and charging time. Physics professor Louis Bloomfield of the University of Virginia told the paper: “I imagine if you’re going for a walk, it’s likely the battery will run out on you.”
Coverage, wind and crowded spaces
The creator FAQ acknowledged limits involving coverage, wind and use near other people. Directed airflow would need to keep rain away from the user, but the displaced water could reach nearby pedestrians. The Washington Post discussed this potential inconvenience along with noise and cost. The sources do not provide controlled measurements that establish how the device performed across weather conditions.

Airflow is not the same as a canopy
Hackaday’s January 25, 2020 retrospective described a leaf-blower demonstration in which directed airflow achieved only minimal water deflection. That experiment illustrates the challenge of pushing rain away, but it was not a test of a finished Air Umbrella or proof that every prototype failed.
What happened after the Kickstarter?
Hackaday’s 2020 retrospective said the project fell apart and that at least some refunds were made. The accounts available do not establish the total number of refunds, the final financial accounting, the fulfillment rate or what happened in each backer’s case.

That distinction matters: a successful crowdfunding campaign records pledges, not guaranteed delivery. The campaign’s total cannot by itself tell backers or later readers whether a product reached the market.

The available sources do not verify a current retail listing for the Air Umbrella. It is best understood as a historical crowdfunded concept, not a confirmed product currently for sale. For ordinary rain protection, a conventional umbrella remains the practical alternative: its canopy physically blocks rain without relying on a battery-powered airflow system.
