Start by identifying the game version, storefront, and DirectX mode you have installed: The Witcher 3 has legacy and next-generation builds, and CD PROJEKT RED has announced new minimum requirements for an upcoming update. Then troubleshoot the specific symptom—launch or gameplay crashes, low frame rates, stuttering, or long loading—one step at a time.

First, identify your installed build

Before changing settings or comparing your PC with requirements, open the main menu and note the version shown beneath the game title. Record the storefront, whether you launch in DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, and whether you use mods, trainers, or console commands. These details help distinguish a problem tied to a particular build or configuration from a general hardware issue. CD PROJEKT RED’s support form requests these details and advises updating older builds before reporting problems. If you intentionally use an older build or mods, note that rather than updating automatically; back up saves before making changes. Saves are in %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves.

Check requirements for that build

Do not treat the game’s published requirements as one universal list. CD PROJEKT RED’s requirements page includes legacy and next-generation tiers, while its updated requirements notice says a new baseline begins with the next update. Confirm which build is installed before applying either set.

Upcoming updated minimum requirements

For the upcoming update, the stated minimum is Windows 11 and DirectX 12, with 12 GB RAM, 70 GB of SSD storage, an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 processor, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB graphics card. These are announced minimum specifications for that update, not a universal description of every existing installation. CD PROJEKT RED says Windows 10 may still run the game, but will no longer be tested and compatibility and performance are not guaranteed going forward.

Legacy and next-generation requirements

The legacy requirements page lists separate DirectX 11 minimum and recommended tiers and DirectX 12 high and ultra tiers, with differing operating-system, CPU, GPU, and memory specifications; it also lists 50 GB of disk space. Use the tier that matches the game build and settings you are targeting, not the new minimum as a retrospective requirement for every older installation. The page says Windows 7 and Windows 8 support ended on 2024-05-21.

An SSD can matter for storage and loading: CD PROJEKT RED says it supports faster loading and smoother asset streaming. The upcoming requirements notice states, “Furthermore, to support the game’s latest technical enhancements, an SSD is now required.” That statement is attached to the upcoming requirements; it does not establish that an SSD cures crashes or every stutter.

For crashes or launch failures

Try the official low-risk checks in sequence. Close applications you do not need, then verify the game files through your storefront. CD PROJEKT RED’s crash guidance includes temporarily closing antivirus or antimalware applications, checking the PC for malware or viruses, and verifying files. It says malware can sometimes cause crashes; it does not identify it as the likely cause.

  1. Compare your PC with the requirements for your installed build. Account for its DirectX mode and intended settings.
  2. Close unnecessary applications. If you temporarily close antivirus or antimalware software for troubleshooting, restore it afterward and check the PC for malware as the support guidance recommends.
  3. Verify the game files using your storefront’s file-check feature. The exact menu path varies by store.
  4. Clean-install the graphics driver. CD PROJEKT RED recommends this if the earlier checks do not resolve a crash. It is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
  5. Consider the previous driver if the timing fits. If crashes began immediately after a driver update, the support guidance says an older driver may help. Report the issue to the relevant support channel.

For low FPS, stuttering, choppy performance, or long loading

When a PC meets the minimum requirements for the installed build, CD PROJEKT RED’s performance guidance recommends checking drivers, game files, overlays, and background applications. Make one change at a time, then revisit the same scene or activity; that makes it easier to tell whether a step helped.

  1. Clean-install the graphics driver. If the issue started just after a driver update, try the previous version instead and report the problem.
  2. Verify the game files through the storefront. This checks for damaged or missing installation files without assuming a particular store’s interface.
  3. Disable overlays such as Discord, Ubisoft Connect, or Galaxy, then check whether performance changes.
  4. Close unnecessary background software, including hardware-monitoring tools and antivirus or antimalware applications while troubleshooting.
  5. Check loading and streaming separately from crashes. An SSD is relevant to the announced upcoming storage requirement and can support faster loading and smoother asset streaming, but the official guidance does not promise it will eliminate all stuttering.

Do not switch between DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 on the assumption that one is universally faster or more stable. The available mode depends on the installed build, and the official materials do not establish a universally best mode for every GPU and symptom.

If the problem continues, send support a useful report

Record whether the issue happens at launch, continuously during play, or only in a particular location. Include a short video if possible. CD PROJEKT RED’s support instructions ask for a DxDiag report and relevant game details.

  2. Include the game version, storefront, DirectX mode, and whether mods, trainers, or console commands are in use.
  3. If the fault is location-specific, attach the relevant save. The support instructions say to include all files in the save folder; a compressed archive is acceptable.
  4. Describe what triggers the problem and attach a short video if you can.
