Start by checking your local recycling provider’s rules—not by choosing a bin based on its color or the recycling symbol on a package. Once you know which materials are accepted and whether they must be separated, choose a container that fits those collection rules, your space, and the amount you accumulate between pickups.
Check your local recycling rules before choosing a bin
Accepted materials and collection arrangements vary between communities, including neighboring ones. A plastic resin code does not mean a container is accepted locally, and glass collection also varies. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises residents to contact their county or municipality to learn about local options. Check your provider’s current instructions before buying a bin designed around assumed materials.
- Find the accepted-material list from your municipality or recycling provider.
- Ask whether accepted items are collected together or must be separated.
- Check whether the provider supplies a curbside cart or requires a particular container, size, lid, or placement.
These rules determine which bin arrangement will work; a container that does not meet provider requirements may not be usable for collection.
Match the compartments to the collection system

Choose a capacity and footprint that fit your routine
Think about where the bin will sit, how it will be emptied, and whether you must carry it to a curb or shared collection point. Estimate how much accepted material your household accumulates between pickups, then compare bin dimensions and capacity with the space available. There is no universal household-size formula or EPA-recommended capacity in the guidance cited here.
- Infrequent collection can make more capacity useful, but a larger container may be difficult to store or move.
- Limited storage may favor a smaller indoor collection point, though it could fill before the next pickup.
- Check provider-supplied cart requirements before selecting an additional or replacement container.
Make the recycling bin easy to recognize and use
Choose a container that looks different from your trash can. Use readable words and pictures that name the materials your provider accepts; if you have multiple bins, label each one to match the required collection stream.

Openings shaped to admit intended items and sloped lids are optional design ideas described in EPA guidance for venues. They may help discourage incorrect disposal, but a household does not need a specialized lid if it is impractical. Choose a lid and opening that are easy to use, empty, and clean.
Place the bin where recycling happens
A small indoor collection point near the places you handle packages, mail, bottles, or cans can make sorting convenient. If your provider uses an outdoor cart, the indoor bin can serve as a staging point before you transfer materials. EPA program guidance recommends convenient locations near where recyclables are generated and placing recycling near trash. That is a general placement principle, not a tested guarantee about household behavior.

Know what belongs in the bin—and what may need another route
EPA lists common curbside recyclables such as cardboard, paper, food boxes, mail, beverage and food cans, glass bottles and jars, jugs, and plastic bottles and caps. This is a general list, not a promise that every local program accepts each item. Confirm locally before putting an item in the bin.
Plastic bags and wraps, electronics, and textiles generally do not belong in curbside bins under EPA guidance, although local services may differ. Plastic film, many batteries, and household hazardous waste may require designated collection or drop-off. Do not casually put batteries or hazardous waste in a recycling bin or regular trash; check local handling instructions.

Prepare accepted materials as instructed
EPA guidance generally says plastic, metal, and glass containers should be empty and rinsed of food debris, while paper should be empty, clean, and dry. Keep accepted materials clean and dry, and follow any more specific directions from your local provider.
