Hackaday described the hobby project in 2014, including its printed drive parts, plywood-and-pegboard frame, and manual and automatic controls. It documented a winding time-lapse, but did not publish measured speed or accuracy figures.
How the Tesla coil auto-winder works
The machine coordinates two motions: a motor turns the coil former, and a traveling guide feeds wire along its axis. In principle, matching the guide’s travel to the former’s rotation lays successive turns beside one another. The Hackaday feature describes that mechanism for builder “Krux,” who was making a first Tesla coil called Project Icarus.
The reported build was designed to be modular for different coil sizes. Its construction included a semi-flexible 3D-printed motor coupler on the wire-guide axis, a 3D-printed herringbone-style gear on the main axis, and a frame made from plywood and pegboard. A console provided manual and automatic controls, with an LCD showing feedback about the winding.
What the Project Icarus winding used
For Project Icarus, the planned secondary was 4.5 inches in diameter and used 22 AWG magnet wire, according to Hackaday’s January 28, 2014 feature. The same feature shows a time-lapse of an 814-turn winding.

Those figures describe one project, not a universal Tesla-coil specification. A separate educational build described by Yogesh Yashwant Pundlik and Gauri Yogesh Pundlik reports a manually wound 600-turn secondary on a PVC pipe former, coated with varnish. Their 2018 paper is an independent example, not a test of the auto-winder or a recommendation that every coil use those materials or turn counts: “Design and Fabrication of Model of Tesla Coil,” Asian Journal of Electrical Sciences.
What the report does—and does not—establish
The 814-turn time-lapse demonstrates that a winding was filmed, but the feature gives no elapsed time, measured winding accuracy, repeatability, wire-breakage rate, or comparison with hand winding. It also does not specify the motors, controller, software, cost, or a complete bill of materials. The feature links to the builder’s project pages, but the details above are what the Hackaday report establishes.

The available account dates to 2014; it does not establish whether the original machine remains available or whether complete construction files can currently be obtained. Anyone adapting the idea should verify the former size, guide travel and alignment, drive and control arrangement, frame rigidity, and whether reliable plans and a parts list are available. These are design checks, not confirmed specifications of the reported machine.

The auto-winder addresses the mechanical job of laying a secondary coil; it does not operate or make a Tesla coil safe. PBS describes a basic Tesla coil as using a power supply, capacitor, transformer coil, and adjustable spark gap. The capacitor and coil form an oscillating circuit, and a discharge across the gap initiates an impulse that is transformed to higher voltage in the secondary: PBS, “Tesla – Master of Lightning: The Tesla Coil”. Building or operating the electrical apparatus is a separate undertaking from winding its secondary.
