Keep students and staff away from the bat, do not touch or release it, and notify school administration. Contact local animal control or the health department for instructions on safe handling, testing, and assessing possible exposure. If anyone may have been bitten, scratched, or otherwise in contact with the bat, seek advice from public health or a medical professional promptly.

What to do immediately

  1. Keep people away. Move students and staff out of the area and prevent anyone from approaching, touching, or trying to release the bat.
  2. Notify school leadership and facilities staff. Follow your district’s incident procedures and make sure the people responsible for the building know where the bat is.
  3. Call local animal control or the health department. Ask how to arrange safe capture and whether the bat should be tested. Do not release it before consulting a public-health expert; if it cannot be safely captured, ask public health what to do next. The CDC’s bat guidance directs people to animal control or the health department for help.

Do not treat capture as a routine classroom task. CDC describes a container, cardboard, and leather work gloves for capturing a bat in a home, but that is not a classroom-specific procedure. Teachers should get local instructions rather than attempting an untrained capture.

Could a student have been exposed?

Being in the same room does not by itself establish that every person was exposed or needs rabies treatment. The key question is whether a person may have had direct contact that cannot be ruled out. Bat bites can be tiny and may not be noticed, so ask who was present and whether anyone touched the bat, was bitten or scratched, was asleep, was unattended, or could not reliably recognize or report contact. The CDC’s 2022 guidance specifically identifies a bat in a room with someone sleeping or a child left unattended as a situation where contact may be unclear.

Report possible contact promptly to the health department or a medical professional. A lack of a visible mark alone does not rule out contact. CDC clinical guidance says direct bat contact should receive immediate assessment unless a bite or scratch can be definitively ruled out; public-health officials and clinicians, not school staff, determine whether post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is indicated. The CDC Clinical Overview of Rabies and its clinical screening guidance describe that assessment.

Bat Removal Cone, Bat One Way Door, Bat Exclusion Device
  • [One-Way Channel Design] The bat cone features a one-way door mechanism that allows bats to easily exit from the inside, but once they fly out, they cannot re-enter. This clever design ensures bats can leave safely.
  • [Right Angle Design] The 90-degree right angle shape allows for flush installation against walls, eaves, or rooflines without requiring additional spacers or modifications. Perfect for tight spaces where straight tubes cannot be installed, easily adapting to various complex positions.
  • [Long-Lasting Use] The bat cone is made of heavy-duty material, maintaining structural stability throughout the entire exclusion process. Resistant to cracking and reusable.
  • [Easy to Install] This bat removal cone is cleverly designed and easy to install. It protects building surfaces from damage while maintaining the structural appearance.
  • [Packaging Includes] 2 Bat cones and 8 screws.

If someone was bitten or scratched

Wash the wound with soap and water and get medical help right away. If saliva or brain material may have reached the eyes, nose, mouth, or an open wound, seek urgent professional advice. Contact public health promptly so the exposure and the bat’s availability or test results can be considered.

What to tell families and staff about risk

Do not announce that everyone who was in the room needs rabies treatment. Exposure decisions depend on each person’s circumstances, whether direct contact can be excluded, whether the bat is available for testing and its result, and local public-health assessment. CDC advises contacting local or state public health for guidance.

2 Pack Ultrasonic Bat Repellent Devices for Attics and Barns
  • 【Adjustable 10–70 kHz Output】Rotate the control dial to select a frequency based on the room layout and activity area. The broad range includes audible and ultrasonic settings, providing flexible use in attics, barns, garages and storage spaces. Lower settings may be audible to some people or pets.
  • 【Rechargeable Cordless Placement】The built-in 1000mAh battery provides up to 5 days of operation per full USB charge, depending on the selected frequency and operating conditions. Cordless use allows each unit to be placed near roosting or entry areas without requiring a nearby wall outlet.
  • 【Automatic 20/10 Sound Cycle】 Each device emits sound for 20 seconds and pauses for 10 seconds, supporting continuous operation while managing battery use. A one-touch power switch and clear LED operating indicator make setup and routine status checks simple.
  • 【Dry, Covered Use for Better Results】 This model is not waterproof and should be installed indoors or in sheltered outdoor locations protected from rain and moisture. Run the devices continuously near observed activity, remove sound-blocking obstacles, and adjust the frequency or position when needed. Keep away from pet resting areas and observe pets during initial use.
  • 【2-Pack Protection for Two Key Areas】 Place one device near a suspected entry point and the other in a separate activity area, such as an attic, garage, barn or storage room. The integrated rear hanging hole makes placement convenient in indoor or sheltered locations. Keep each speaker facing an open area, with furniture and stored items clear of the front for better sound distribution.

Rabies is serious, but the often-quoted testing statistic needs context: about 5% of bats submitted for rabies testing in the United States tested positive, according to the CDC’s January 15, 2026 MMWR. That percentage describes bats submitted for testing, not all bats or the probability that a bat in a classroom has rabies.

After the bat is removed

Wait for school leadership and the relevant local authorities to direct room access, cleaning, and communication with families. CDC school materials say wild animals should not be in classrooms and students should not touch bats. They do not set out a bat-specific classroom cleaning or closure protocol, so do not improvise one in place of district and local procedures.

Bat Exclusion Device, 2 Pack Humane One Way Bat Door with Tape and Screws
  • 【Perfect One‑Way Tapered‑Cone Design】This bat exclusion device features a tapered‑cone design to guide bats outward. The one‑way bat door is constructed from premium plastic, delivering a smooth surface with a gradually narrowing 15‑degree downward angle. This helps bats exit faster while preventing them from re‑entering, providing a humane, safe and bat‑friendly solution
  • 【Application Scenarios】This humane one‑way exclusion tool is ideal for homes where bats enter through house gaps, stay active in attics, or cause noise at night. The compact bat cone can be installed in attics, under eaves, gable vents, ridge vents, along rooflines, and other narrow or irregular access points. This exclusion tool fits perfectly for common bat entry and exit areas
  • 【Easy Installation】Simple bat exclusion starts by placing the device over a confirmed bat entry and exit point. Secure it with the included screws or use tape on suitable surfaces. The included tape also helps seal uneven edges around the opening. After bat activity has stopped, remove the bat cones and seal the opening
  • 【Sturdy-Built & Reusable】Made of strong yet lightweight plastic, the one way bat exclusion device is designed for repeated use. After one opening is clear, simply remove it and move it to another area. For shoppers looking for a bat door one way solution, the two units can also be used on separate active openings for better value
  • 【Complete DIY Installation Kit】Kit includes 2 units for bat cones, bat removal, 1 roll of heavy-duty cloth-backed tape, 9 self-tapping screws, and 1 installation instruction manual. The all-in-one kit makes setup easier, even for first-time users

Preventing repeat entry

If bats are getting into the building repeatedly, facilities staff can consult animal control or a wildlife conservation agency about locating entry points and bat-proofing. CDC’s bat guidance discusses sealing openings and seeking agency help; local rules and wildlife protections may apply. This is a follow-up building-maintenance issue, separate from the immediate response to a bat in a classroom.

Official guidance for schools

The CDC’s Appendix D: Guidelines for Animals in School Settings says of mammals at high risk for transmitting rabies, including bats: “Students should not be permitted to touch these animals, nor are these animals appropriate as residents in the classroom.” The CDC also provides broader resources for schools and daycares.
