You can explore classic ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and DOS software in a browser, without setting up vintage hardware. The best starting point depends on the system you want: Turbo80 focuses on the Spectrum, C64 Online on the Commodore 64, and Internet Archive and Retro Online cover broader DOS and game collections. Each service has different controls, setup needs and compatibility limits.

For ZX Spectrum games: Turbo80
Turbo80’s guide describes a JavaScript ZX Spectrum emulator created in 2026. It runs without installation and covers a range of Spectrum-family machines and file formats. The guide lists keyboard, gamepad and touch input, so it can suit a desktop or a touch device. It also advertises a library of over 15,000 ZXDB-based games; that figure is Turbo80’s description of its own library, not an independent count.
If you already have a Spectrum game file, Turbo80 also lets you load files rather than relying only on its ready-made library. Check the guide’s format and machine support before choosing a file: an emulator’s platform focus does not guarantee that every title or file variant will work.
For Commodore 64 software: C64 Online
C64 Online is focused on Commodore 64 games and applications. The site says its software can be played in a modern browser without downloading or installing an emulator, and it claims a catalogue of 7,000+ games. That number is the provider’s own catalogue claim, accessed on 2026-10-04; the page does not state when the count was published or establish it through an independent audit.

MS-DOS Software Library
The Internet Archive’s MS-DOS emulation help page says the collection runs DOS-compatible programs using EM-DOSBOX. This is a useful place to browse a broad historical software collection, but browser emulation is not a promise that every program will behave like it did on its original computer.

Internet Archive says it includes games from the 1970s–1990s and runs them using JSMESS, a JavaScript port of MESS/MAME. JavaScript is required; browser settings, memory limits and older browsers can interfere with playback.

What to check before you start
- Pick the right platform. A Spectrum-focused service will not substitute for a C64 library, and the Internet Arcade is for arcade games rather than computer software.
- Check the input method. Turbo80 documents keyboard, gamepad and touch controls. For other services, consult their current pages if you need a particular controller or input setup.
- Allow for browser limits. JavaScript, browser settings, memory and browser age can affect some Internet Archive experiences. DOS emulation can also run too quickly or fail to match a program’s compatibility needs.
- Do not assume progress will persist. Save behavior differs by service and title. Verify it before spending time on a long session.
- Check current catalogues and features. Provider libraries, browser support and membership terms can change; counts and feature lists on a service are its own claims unless independently established.
