The ProStar 9400 is best identified as a portable multimedia laptop, not a documented dedicated gaming system. A vintage-ad archive records a ProStar 9400 advertisement from 1994, while related machines using the same underlying ODM model appear in 1995. That makes “from 1995” an uncertain date for the 9400 itself.
What was the ProStar 9400?
MacDat’s Microstar NS-9540 ad database entry associates the ProStar 9400 with ODM model Microstar NS-9540 and records a ProStar 9400 advertisement dated 1994. The database also lists other machines using that ODM designation in 1995, including the Sager NP9500. Those entries show why the year can be confusing, but they do not establish that the ProStar 9400 first launched in 1995.
That underlying design appeared under different branding, a common complication when identifying vintage laptops. The ProStar label on a particular machine, its model number and any surviving original documentation are more useful for confirming its exact identity than a date attached to a related rebadged product.
What hardware did the ProStar family offer?
A secondary hardware reference describes the related FMA9400 family as a 486-based color multimedia laptop. These are reported family options, not a confirmed specification for every ProStar-branded unit.

| Feature | Reported family details |
|---|---|
| Processor | Intel 486 DX-25 or DX-33 options |
| Display | 10.3-inch DSTN color or 10.4-inch active-matrix TFT color option; the source does not establish which screen a specific ProStar unit has |
| Graphics | VLB graphics |
| Audio | 16-bit internal audio |
| Optical drive | 2x CD-ROM |
| Expansion | Two Type II or one Type III PCMCIA slots |
| Battery | NiMH |
These specifications are reported in CreepingNet’s FMA9400 hardware notes, which describe the FMA9400 as a 1994 model. Because this is enthusiast documentation rather than a manufacturer specification sheet, treat it as a guide to the platform family rather than proof of the configuration inside any individual ProStar laptop.
Was it really a portable gaming system?
The documented combination of color display, CD-ROM, audio and a 486 processor fits the description of a portable multimedia laptop. But the available references do not show that ProStar marketed the 9400 as a gaming system, list compatible games, or provide gaming benchmarks. It would therefore be misleading to claim that it was a dedicated gaming laptop or to promise how particular games performed.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to identify a particular unit
- Check the underside or rear label for the ProStar model designation and any manufacturer or model identifiers.
- Record the processor, screen type and installed drives from the unit itself; family-level descriptions do not confirm those details.
- Look for original manuals, advertisements or configuration records tied to that specific model before sourcing parts.
The family notes mention a NiMH battery, but they do not identify a safe, compatible replacement pack or charger. Do not assume a generic vintage-laptop battery or adapter will fit; verify the exact model and electrical requirements using documentation for the individual machine.
