AMD said its EPYC Venice processor was the first high-performance computing (HPC) product in the industry to be taped out and brought up on TSMC’s N2 process. That April 2025 milestone meant the design had reached silicon and initial bring-up—not that Venice was in production or available to buy. AMD later reported that production ramp began in Taiwan in May 2026.

What AMD announced about Venice

On April 14, 2025, AMD announced that its next-generation EPYC processor, codenamed Venice, had been taped out and brought up on TSMC’s advanced 2nm process, known as N2. AMD called Venice the first HPC product in the industry to reach that milestone and described it as a major step in its data-center CPU roadmap. AMD’s announcement said Venice was on track to launch in 2026.

The “first” claim should be read as AMD’s characterization. The located announcements establish what AMD said; they do not independently verify an industry-wide ranking of every product in development. Venice is an EPYC server processor, not a consumer desktop CPU.

What tape-out and bring-up mean—and what they do not

Tape-out is the point at which a chip design is finalized for fabrication and sent to a foundry to make physical silicon. Bring-up refers to the early work of getting that silicon operating and checking its basic functionality. These are meaningful engineering milestones, but they do not establish that a chip has entered volume manufacturing, shipped to customers, or become generally available.

AMD’s April 2025 release also said 5th Gen EPYC CPUs had been successfully brought up and validated at TSMC’s Arizona facility. That was a separate statement about 5th Gen EPYC; it was not the Venice N2 milestone.

Venice’s reported timeline

Date Milestone What it establishes
April 14, 2025 AMD announced Venice tape-out and bring-up on TSMC N2. AMD reported that Venice silicon had reached tape-out and bring-up. The release forecast a 2026 launch. AMD
Q4 2025 TSMC said N2 entered volume production as planned. This is TSMC’s reported process-node production timing, not confirmation that Venice itself was in volume production. TSMC N2 technology page
May 21, 2026 AMD said 6th Gen EPYC Venice had entered production ramp in Taiwan on N2. AMD reported a ramp in Taiwan and said it had future plans to ramp production at TSMC’s Arizona fabrication facility. The announcement does not itself confirm customer shipments or retail availability. AMD’s update

The timeline separates two different facts: TSMC reported that its N2 process entered volume production in Q4 2025, while AMD later reported Venice’s production ramp had begun in Taiwan. The node’s general production status should not be treated as a product-specific shipment announcement.

What TSMC N2 means

N2 is TSMC’s advanced 2nm process technology. TSMC’s official N2 technology page says it uses first-generation nanosheet transistor technology and entered volume production in Q4 2025. The “2nm” label identifies a process generation; by itself, it does not tell you Venice’s clock speeds, power use, performance, or transistor count.

What the announcements do not tell us

  • They provide no measured Venice performance, power, or yield results. TSMC executive comments about better performance, power efficiency, and yields are qualitative, not quantified Venice test results.
  • They do not specify a customer shipment date or confirm general retail availability.
  • AMD’s planned future Arizona ramp is not the same as saying Venice production had already ramped there; AMD located the reported start of the production ramp in Taiwan.

AMD chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su described the relationship this way in the April 2025 release: “Being a lead HPC customer for TSMC’s N2 process and for TSMC Arizona Fab 21 are great examples of how we are working closely together to drive innovation and deliver the advanced technologies that will power the future of computing.” TSMC chairman and CEO Dr. C.C. Wei said: “We are proud to have AMD be a lead HPC customer for our advanced 2nm (N2) process technology and TSMC Arizona fab.” These comments describe the companies’ partnership; they do not add product-specific Venice benchmarks or availability details.
