Slow down, leave a safe gap, and stay behind farm equipment until you have enough room, visibility, and legal clearance to pass. On a narrow road, never squeeze alongside or rely on the operator to move over; large machinery may turn widely, stop before turning, or occupy more of the road than a car.

What should you do first?

  1. Ease off the accelerator and slow smoothly. Farm equipment travels more slowly than ordinary traffic and can be difficult to accelerate, slow, or stop. Avoid an abrupt maneuver. MnDOT describes these handling limits; the North Dakota Highway Patrol also urges caution around slow-moving farm equipment.
  2. Leave a safe following distance. Keep enough space to see the road and stop if the equipment slows or turns. Following closely can leave you with little time to react, and the operator may have difficulty seeing vehicles behind or beside the machinery. Debris or agricultural products can also fall onto the road, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.
  3. Read the road and the equipment before deciding to pass. Check the available sight distance, road width, bends, hills, junctions, oncoming traffic, machinery and load dimensions, and any sign that the vehicle is about to turn. If any of these are unclear, keep waiting.

When is it safe to pass?

Pass only when there is enough clear road to complete the maneuver without forcing the equipment toward the edge, cutting in sharply, or relying on oncoming traffic to yield—and only when local traffic rules allow it. The New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi says to pass only when it is safe and legal. The North Dakota Highway Patrol likewise advises checking that passing is legal and warns against passing on a hill. Those are jurisdiction-specific examples, not a complete statement of the rules everywhere: follow the signs, road markings, and laws where you are driving.

Do not treat a move toward the center of the road as an invitation to overtake. Long or wide equipment may need extra room to turn and can cross the center line while doing so. A tractor that has stopped may be preparing to turn; stay back until its movement is clear. The NZ Transport Agency specifically warns about stopped tractors that may be about to turn.

Why narrow roads call for extra patience

  • Machinery can take up more space than a car. Its width, length, or load may leave too little clearance for a safe pass, even if the road appears briefly open.
  • Turns can be wide. Equipment may move toward or across the center of the road while turning. Do not pass beside it or assume it will stay in its lane throughout the turn; MnDOT highlights this risk.
  • The operator may not see you. Farm vehicles can have large blind spots, according to MnDOT. Avoid tailgating and do not linger alongside the equipment.
  • Road conditions can change behind it. Mud, crops, or other material may fall onto the road. Leave room and adjust speed if you encounter debris, as advised by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

What if there is no safe passing opportunity?

Continue behind the equipment and wait for a clearly safe, legal opening. Do not squeeze past on a bend, hill, narrow shoulder, or stretch with limited visibility; do not try to make room by pressuring the operator to move over. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety’s tractor road-operation guidance notes that operators should pull over only when it is safe and visibility is good. A driver should not assume a suitable pull-off is available or that the equipment can safely leave the road.

How common are farm-equipment crashes?

MnDOT reported 392 crashes involving farm equipment in Minnesota from 2023 to 2025, resulting in 12 deaths and 167 injuries, in a September 16, 2026 news release. Those are Minnesota counts, not a national rate or an estimate of any individual driver’s risk. The practical response remains to leave space and wait rather than force a pass.
