You can use an open-weight AI model on your computer by downloading its model files, running them in a local inference app, and confirming your prompts are sent to the local model—not a cloud feature. For a beginner-friendly desktop workflow, LM Studio documents offline chat and document processing after download. For a command-line or API workflow, Ollama documents a local endpoint at http://localhost:11434/api. Local processing reduces the risk of sending your application text to an AI provider, but it does not protect data from every risk on your computer or override your employer’s rules.
What “local” does—and does not—mean
An open-weight model is one whose model weights are available for download. To run it locally, you need the model files on your computer and an inference runtime that processes your prompt there. This is a different path from sending a prompt to a hosted model. LM Studio and Ollama document local inference options, but both also have features or endpoints that can use network services. Check the actual model and feature you selected rather than relying on an app’s name or appearance.
Local inference is not a universal confidentiality guarantee. It cannot by itself prevent someone with access to your device from reading local files, protect data exposed through backups or screen sharing, or determine whether your employer permits a particular tool. The product documentation describes vendor behavior; it is not an independent privacy audit.
Choose a local runtime
| Option | Best fit | Privacy-relevant details | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| LM Studio | Graphical desktop use, chat, and document chat | Its documentation describes offline chat and local document processing after model files are downloaded. Searching for and downloading models, downloading runtimes, and checking for app updates require connectivity. Its local server can serve on localhost or the local network. LM Studio offline use | Convenient interface, but distinguish local features from optional cloud features. Supported for macOS, Windows, and Linux. LM Studio app documentation |
| Ollama | Command line, local API, or integrations | Its documented local API is http://localhost:11434/api; hosted cloud endpoints are separate. Local requests to a downloaded model do not need an authorization header. Ollama API introduction |
More terminal- and API-oriented; select the local endpoint rather than a hosted one. |
Neither option is established as more private overall. Compare the interface, operating-system support, model availability, storage and hardware needs, local-versus-cloud behavior, and whether a server is enabled. Model sizes and hardware requirements vary; check the current requirements for the model you choose rather than assuming a universal RAM or GPU minimum.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
Set up and test the local path before using application material
- Install the runtime. Get LM Studio or Ollama from its official site and install the version for your operating system. Installation and updates may require an internet connection.
- Download the model weights. In LM Studio, search for and download a model before starting an offline session. Model search and downloads need connectivity; once the files are on your computer, LM Studio documents offline chat and local document processing. LM Studio offline use
- Run a harmless test prompt. Ask a non-sensitive question first. In Ollama, use the local API documented at
http://localhost:11434/api, not the hosted endpointhttps://ollama.com/api. Confirm the app shows the intended downloaded model and that any integration points to the local address. Ollama API introduction - Check the feature and network path. Avoid cloud models and web search when handling application text. If you want a stronger separation, finish downloads and update checks first, then disconnect from the internet or use your operating system’s network controls while working. That is a precaution, not protection against local access, malware, or other device risks.
- Use only the necessary text. For a résumé edit, provide the relevant bullet points; for tailoring, provide the job requirements and the relevant draft. Leave out contact details, references, account credentials, and confidential employer information unless they are necessary for the task.
- Review what remains on the device. Check how the app stores chat history or documents, and delete drafts or history when appropriate. Use a personally controlled or explicitly approved device, avoid shared accounts, and follow your normal device-security practices.
Prevent accidental cloud use or network exposure
Downloading a model is only one part of staying on the local path. LM Studio’s June 2026 privacy policy says local chat histories and documents are not transmitted when downloaded models are used locally; it describes cloud models and web search as separate cloud features. LM Studio privacy policy Ollama likewise separates its local API from hosted cloud endpoints, and its March 2026 policy says prompts and responses processed locally are not collected or transmitted by Ollama. Ollama privacy policy These statements describe the vendors’ services, not every app integration or other software running on your computer.
LM Studio’s local server can be configured to serve on localhost or the local network. Keep it local unless you intentionally need network access and have secured it. Ollama documents a localhost API address. The cited documentation does not establish one universal firewall, authentication, or bind-address configuration for every version and operating system, so do not assume a server is secure in every deployment.

Check workplace rules and the device boundary
Local processing does not settle whether you are allowed to use AI for an application or install software on a managed computer. Check the rules that apply to your employer, job application, and device before entering any material. The same caution applies to a personal computer if it is shared or managed by someone else.

- Do not enter confidential information from a current or former employer unless you are authorized to do so.
- Consider whether screen sharing, clipboard synchronization, backups, local chat history, or another user account could expose the text.
- Do not treat deleting a chat as proof that every local copy has been securely erased; storage and deletion behavior depend on the app and device configuration.
