If you think someone else has accessed your Epic Games account, secure the email account tied to it first. Then recover or reset Epic access through Epic’s official sign-in flow, turn two-factor authentication (2FA) back on, and check linked accounts. If the computer or phone you used may be compromised, make password changes from a different trusted computer.
What to do first if someone accessed your Epic account
- Secure the associated email account. If you can still access the mailbox linked to Epic, change its password to a unique one and enable 2FA. If you cannot access it, contact the email provider to recover it first. Epic says access to the account email is key to recovering an Epic account. See Epic’s compromised-account instructions.
- Use Epic’s official recovery flow. Choose “Trouble signing in?” or the account recovery option and follow the verification prompts. Set a new password that you do not use for any other account. Epic recommends unique passwords and suggests using a password manager to generate and store them. Start at Epic’s account recovery guide.
- After access is restored, harden the account. Reset the password if you have not already, re-enable 2FA, and review the accounts linked to Epic. Epic’s post-recovery steps are described in its recovery follow-up guide.
- Protect connected identities. Use unique passwords and 2FA on linked console or social accounts as well as on the email account. Epic notes that the security of an Epic account also depends on linked accounts; see Epic’s account-security guidance.
Choose the right recovery route
You still control the email on the Epic account
After securing the mailbox, use Epic’s recovery flow and complete its code or verification prompts. Create a new, unique Epic password when prompted.

You have lost access to the account email
Try to recover the mailbox through its email provider before relying on email-based Epic verification. Epic’s recovery flow includes a lost-email route and may ask for additional information. If you still cannot access the Epic account, submit an account recovery request through Epic’s official support flow.
Someone changed the email address on the Epic account
If you can sign in through a linked console or social account, do not treat that as a complete recovery. A linked sign-in may get you into the account, but it does not restore control of an email address someone else changed. Request account recovery from Epic if the account email is no longer one you control. Epic explains this scenario in its compromised-account help page.

- Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
- Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
- If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
- Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
- Redemption: Online
You can use a linked console or social account
Epic lists PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Facebook, and Google among examples of linked sign-in routes. Use one only as a way to try to access your Epic account; if the Epic email was changed or you cannot make account changes, continue with Epic’s recovery process. For an explanation of Epic sign-in, see Epic’s sign-in guide.
Your 2FA method is unavailable
Epic’s troubleshooting guidance describes possible alternatives such as email verification or saved backup codes for an authenticator setup. The available option can depend on your setup, so follow the current prompts in Epic’s 2FA lockout help page. After signing in, enable 2FA again.

Turn 2FA back on and check linked accounts
Epic lists authenticator apps, SMS, and email as 2FA methods, and recommends an authenticator app. In Epic’s words, “Using an authenticator app provides the strongest protection.” That is Epic’s recommendation, not a comparative product test.
Use the 2FA option available in your Epic account’s security settings, then review linked accounts for any you do not recognize. If there is an unknown linked account, unusual activity, or you cannot make security changes, contact Epic Support through its official help flow. CISA’s general guidance says multi-factor authentication adds protection beyond a password and favors phishing-resistant MFA where a service supports it; the Epic account guidance cited here does not establish hardware security-key support for this account flow. See CISA’s archived “More than a Password” guidance.

If the device may be compromised
Changing your Epic password does not establish that the phone or computer used during the incident is clean. If you suspect that device may be compromised, change passwords for affected services from a different computer you control. CISA also recommends keeping applications and operating systems updated and enabling their native antivirus and anti-malware protections. Its device advice is general cybersecurity guidance, not an Epic-specific recovery requirement; see CISA’s personal-device guidance.

Submit an account recovery request through Epic if you cannot sign in after self-service recovery, cannot recover the account email, or someone changed that email to an address you do not control. Epic says its team will verify your identity and help you regain access, but recovery is not guaranteed. Use only Epic’s official support flow; a third-party service cannot recover an Epic account on Epic’s behalf.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
