Google has not published a failure rate or confirmed a service-wide outage, so reports of problems do not establish how many Pixel owners are affected.
What changed with Pixel Now Playing?
In March 2026, Google moved Pixel’s built-in music recognition into a standalone Now Playing app. Google’s Pixel Drop announcement described a dedicated home for the feature, including a history of recognized songs and favorites. The change means that after installing or updating the app, the feature may need time to finish preparing its song fingerprints.
Google’s current support guidance says the app may take up to 24 hours to start working after download. Its March 12, 2026 troubleshooting guide likewise says preparation and fingerprint downloading after an update can take up to 24 hours. Fix automatic song recognition in this order
- Allow setup time. If Now Playing was just installed or updated, give it up to 24 hours to complete preparation and download fingerprints before judging automatic recognition.
- Make sure Now Playing is enabled. Open Now Playing settings and verify that the feature is turned on. Google lists this as a basic check when automatic identification fails.
- Turn Battery Saver off. Test recognition with Battery Saver disabled.
- Check microphone permission for Android System Intelligence. Google’s troubleshooting guide specifically calls out this permission when automatic identification is not working.
- Try a manual search. Search from the Now Playing app, Quick Settings, a Now Playing widget, or the lock-screen shortcut. If a manual search works but background recognition does not, that helps distinguish the manual search path from automatic recognition; it does not by itself identify the cause.
Google’s documented first-line checks do not include clearing app storage, uninstalling Android System Intelligence updates, or resetting the phone. Avoid starting with those steps, particularly if you want to preserve song history.

If song history or favorites are missing
After installing or updating the app, wait through the setup window and confirm Now Playing is enabled before concluding that history has failed. Google’s March community guidance says favorites are saved to your account. For an export workaround, it describes sharing tracks individually or saving them to a playlist in the connected music app; it does not describe a bulk history-export feature. If Now Playing notifications are missing
First check that Now Playing and Android System Intelligence are updated and that notification permissions are allowed. In September 2026, Android Authority reported limited user reports that recognized-song notifications were returning and suggested availability might be rolling out gradually or controlled server-side. That report does not establish that notifications are available on every Pixel, or that a notification change resolves other recognition problems. Android Authority’s September 2026 report.

How recognition works—and what Google says about privacy
Google says Pixel first checks nearby music against an on-device song library. On Pixel 4 and later, including Pixel Fold, the feature also uses federated analytics to improve recognition of songs that are played more often. If the local library does not recognize a song, Now Playing may send a short digital audio fingerprint to Google for a cloud match. Google says, “It doesn’t send raw audio or background conversations to Google.”
The optional “Show search button on lock screen” feature also sends a short digital fingerprint when tapped. Google says fingerprints are used to recognize music. Google Pixel Help: Find out what music is playing near you.

Can Shazam identify songs automatically on Android?
Yes. Apple’s Shazam guide documents Auto Shazam on Android: it can continue identifying music while you switch apps or lock the phone, and saves results to the Shazam library. Auto Shazam is a separate app and needs its own setup; it may show a persistent notification while running. Pixel’s Now Playing is integrated with Pixel and can recognize music in the background. These are different workflows, not evidence that one service is more accurate: no sourced head-to-head accuracy test is available. Apple: Use Auto Shazam.
Open recognized songs in a music service
Google says you can connect a music service in Now Playing settings and open identified songs in your preferred app. A preferred service may not be available, and service availability can vary.
