Google’s Pixel 9 has a Recall-like feature, but it is no longer just a plan: Pixel Screenshots is an app for saving, organizing, and searching information in screenshots you take. It can help you find something you captured earlier, such as a door code or product detail. It does not continuously record everything on your screen.
What is Pixel Screenshots?
Google introduced Pixel Screenshots with the Pixel 9 series in August 2024. The app analyzes screenshot content so you can search for details later and see links to the screenshots those details came from. Google’s launch example is finding the door code for a vacation stay after saving a screenshot containing it. Google’s Pixel 9 AI feature announcement describes the app as a way to “save, organize and recall information from screenshots you’ve taken.”
Google’s current help documentation describes natural-language search, generated titles and summaries, suggested actions, collections, and reminders. Suggestions derived from screenshots can also appear in supported apps such as YouTube Music and Google Maps; they work only for screenshots processed after the latest version of the app is installed. How to search and organize screenshots
Search for something you captured
Open Pixel Screenshots and search using a description of the information you want to find. Google says you can use natural language and tap an action chip in supported cases. Search is based on screenshot content, so describe a detail likely to appear in the image—for example, the name of a place or an item of product information.

Organize results and follow up
- Titles and summaries: The app can generate them to help identify screenshot content.
- Collections: Group related screenshots together.
- Reminders: Set a reminder from screenshot information when you need to act on it later.
- Suggested actions: Use available action chips or screenshot-derived suggestions in supported apps.
Google says screenshots already on the phone’s file system appear in Pixel Screenshots by default. Deleting an image from the file system or photo folders also deletes it from the app. AI search models download over Wi-Fi, and some functions may not be available until those downloads are complete. Google’s help page lists the feature controls and current behavior.

Google lists English, German, and Japanese, and availability in Australia, Canada, Germany, India, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. AI features require an active eligible Google Account on the phone. Because device and regional support can change, check Google’s current availability information for your device and location.
How Pixel Screenshots differs from Microsoft Recall
Both products aim to help people retrieve information they encountered earlier, but the documented capture methods are different. Pixel Screenshots works with screenshots saved by the user. Microsoft says Recall, when opted in, saves snapshots of the active PC screen every few seconds and when the active window’s content changes. The name “Recall-like” describes the retrieval idea; it should not be taken to mean the apps capture information in the same way.

Does Pixel Screenshots save everything you see?
No. Google describes an app centered on screenshots, not a continuous record of screen activity. It should not be expected to retrieve unsaved browsing history, or content you saw but never captured in a screenshot. That is a key difference from Microsoft’s description of Recall’s opted-in periodic snapshots.

Privacy controls and what Google says about data
Google states: “Your Screenshots app data and recent activity are protected in a secure, isolated environment on your device or in the cloud.” It also says, “Unless you give permission to share this data for some other purpose, it isn’t shared with apps or Google.” The wording does not promise that all processing always stays on the phone.
Google’s help documentation describes controls to turn off AI search and delete all AI summaries and metadata. Google’s Pixel 9 announcement identifies Tensor G4 as the first processor to run Gemini Nano with Multimodality, but that statement alone does not establish every part of Pixel Screenshots’ processing path.
