Windows 11’s Snap Layouts and Snap Assist provide a documented way to arrange app windows. A November 2024 report also described experimental text prompts for the feature, but Microsoft’s current support documentation does not confirm that those prompts became part of the standard Windows release.
What Snap Assist does in Windows 11
Snap is Windows’ built-in feature for positioning and resizing app windows on screen. Snap Assist helps you fill the remaining spaces in a layout by choosing from other open windows. Microsoft describes it as showing thumbnails of your other open windows after you snap one to a side of the screen.
How to use Snap Layouts and Snap Assist
Choose a layout from the maximize button
- Move the pointer over the window’s Maximize/Restore button.
- Choose a layout from the Snap Layouts flyout, then select the position for that window.
- When Snap Assist offers thumbnails of other open windows, select one to fill another space. Continue selecting windows for any remaining spaces.
Open layouts with a keyboard shortcut
- With the app window active, press Windows key + Z to open Snap Layouts.
- Choose a layout and position, then select other open windows from Snap Assist to fill available spaces.
Snap by dragging to an edge
- Drag a window to the edge of the screen where you want it placed, then release it.
- Choose another open window from the Snap Assist thumbnails if they appear.
The layout choices can vary with display size, so you may not see the same arrangement options on every screen.
How to configure Snap behavior
- Open Settings > System > Multitasking.
- Turn on Snap windows if it is off, then expand its options.
- Use the individual controls to choose whether Windows suggests other windows after snapping, shows the layout flyout on the maximize button, displays the Snap bar at the top of the screen, and shows snapped windows in the taskbar, Task View, and Alt+Tab.
The available controls let you tailor the standard Snap workflow; they do not establish that experimental text prompts are available.

Did Windows 11 add text instructions to Snap Assist?
A WindowsForum report published November 18, 2024, described text prompts in a beta or hidden feature. Its examples included “Choose where to move this window,” “Choose where to arrange this window,” “Choose where to snap this window,” and “Choose an app layout for your screen.” The report also described enabling the feature with a ViveTool toggle.
That account is a secondary report about an experiment, not confirmation of a broadly released Windows feature. Microsoft’s current Snap support pages document layouts, suggestions, keyboard access, and settings, but do not confirm those exact prompt strings or establish whether they reached stable Windows builds. Treat the prompts as reported experimental behavior, not a current standard Snap Assist feature.
