The best NOBULL alternative depends on your sessions: choose the Reebok Nano X5 for mixed gym work and lifting, the Nike Metcon 10 for a firm lifting platform, the R.A.D. One V2 for broad cross-training, the TYR CXT-2 Trainer for structured support and reported wide sizing, or the Nike Free Metcon 6 for more flexible circuits. None is a universal best, and these gym shoes are not substitutes for dedicated distance-running shoes.

How to choose a NOBULL alternative

Cross-training shoes balance competing needs. A firm, stable heel can feel reassuring under a bar, while a flexible forefoot is more comfortable for jumps, circuits, and other dynamic work. Fit, outsole grip, and how much running you do matter as much as brand reputation.

  • For lifting: Look for a stable platform and heel firmness.
  • For circuits and plyometrics: Consider forefoot flexibility and cushioning.
  • For lateral movement or rope work: Check the outsole grip and shoe structure.
  • For fit: Verify the specific model’s sizing and width options; reviewer fit impressions may not match your foot.
  • For running: Distinguish short conditioning bouts from longer runs. These shoes are designed around gym training, not distance running.

Tom’s Guide’s roundup, last updated 20 August 2026, names the R.A.D. One V2 its overall pick, the Nike Metcon 10 its choice for readers who prefer Metcons, and the Reebok Nano X5 its lifting-focused option. Those are that publication’s editorial judgments, not a universal ranking. Its reviewers report testing shoes over months to years across resistance training, Olympic lifting, walking and running, Hyrox, HIIT, CrossFit, and outdoor bootcamps, including on gym floors, concrete, and soil. Which alternatives suit different workouts?

Model Best fit for What to know
Reebok Nano X5 Mixed gym work and lifting Tom’s Guide describes it as a spacious all-rounder for lifting and HIIT. The reviewers say it is more suited to weightlifting than some alternatives and not intended for runs over roughly 1–2 km; that is their assessment, not a manufacturer limit. [Tom’s Guide]
Nike Metcon 10 Metcon fans and strength work Tom’s Guide identifies it as the best-in-class Metcon in its testing. Its firm training-shoe feel is worth weighing against a more running-oriented shoe if your workouts include longer runs. [Tom’s Guide]
R.A.D. One V2 Broad cross-training Tom’s Guide’s overall pick for CrossFit, lifting, plyometrics, short runs, and gymnastics. The reviewer reports a snug fit, no width options, and that it may not suit wide feet. [Tom’s Guide]
TYR CXT-2 Trainer Structured support and width choice Comparative coverage describes a stable, structured feel and reports medium/wide and extra-wide options. Confirm the current model’s size and width availability before buying. [CrossFit Norwich Gear Room]
Nike Free Metcon 6 Flexible general gym sessions Men’s Fitness describes a flexible forefoot and solid heel base for high-rep strength training, plyometrics, and cardio drills, but cautions that it is not built for heavy lifting. [Men’s Fitness]

What to expect from each shoe

Reebok Nano X5: a mixed-workout default

The Nano X5 is a reasonable shoe to compare if your week alternates strength training, HIIT, and dynamic exercises. Tom’s Guide calls it a spacious “little bit of everything” option. The same review says it is not for runs over roughly 1–2 km, so runners who regularly cover more distance should look at a dedicated running shoe. Tom’s Guide’s review.

Nike Metcon 10: prioritize a stable feel for strength work

If you want the Metcon line, the Metcon 10 is the current model highlighted by Tom’s Guide. Its firm, stable training-shoe character is most relevant to readers who prioritize strength work; it may be less appealing if running comfort is a major part of each session. Tom’s Guide calls it the best-in-class Metcon it tested, an editorial conclusion rather than a guarantee that it will suit every foot or workout. Tom’s Guide’s roundup.

R.A.D. One V2: broad capability, snug fit

For a varied CrossFit-style routine, the R.A.D. One V2 is Tom’s Guide’s overall cross-training pick. Its review covers lifting, plyometrics, short runs, and gymnastics, while warning that the fit is snug and there are no width options. The brand describes it this way: “This shoe is tuned for performance.” That is a brand statement, not an independent tester’s conclusion. Tom’s Guide’s roundup.

TYR CXT-2 Trainer: consider it for structure and width options

The CXT-2 is a candidate if you want a more built-out, structured platform. Comparative coverage reports medium/wide and extra-wide options, which may make it worth investigating if standard-width shoes are uncomfortable. That coverage is not a current stock listing, so check the exact CXT-2 product page and sizing available where you shop. CrossFit Norwich Gear Room’s comparison.

Nike Free Metcon 6: prioritize flexibility for circuits

The Free Metcon 6 suits readers whose general gym sessions include high-rep strength work, plyometrics, and cardio drills. Men’s Fitness highlights its flexible forefoot and solid heel base, but says it is not built for heavy lifting. If heavy barbell work is the priority, compare it with a firmer lifting-oriented option instead. Men’s Fitness’ cross-training guide.

Make fit and running distance part of the decision

A reviewer’s description of a shoe as spacious or snug is a useful starting point, not a substitute for trying it on. The R.A.D. One V2’s reported snug fit and lack of width choices are especially relevant for wide feet; the TYR CXT-2’s reported width options merit checking if you need more room. Confirm current sizing for the precise model, and check the retailer’s return policy before relying on an online fit impression.

For short runs mixed into gym training, these models may be suitable depending on your comfort and workout. For longer or regular distance running, do not treat a cross-trainer’s short-run capability as evidence that it is a running shoe. Older comparisons may discuss earlier generations, such as Metcon 9, Nano X4, or CXT-2; use them for general design and fit context, not as proof of current product availability or specifications.
