If your U.S. passport is lost or stolen in Brazil, report it if it is still valid, then contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate and apply in person. Bring a U.S.-sized passport photo, identification, citizenship evidence if available, your itinerary, and Form DS-11 with a detailed account of what happened. If you need to travel soon, tell consular staff: they may be able to issue a limited-validity emergency passport, but timing and local procedures must be confirmed with the U.S. mission.

Report a valid lost or stolen passport promptly to reduce the risk of identity misuse. The State Department’s online reporting process cancels the passport within one business day and sends confirmation. Once canceled, it cannot be used for international travel, even if you later find it. Do not report an expired passport as lost or stolen. The State Department explains how to report a passport.
A report is not a replacement application. You still need to apply in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate. You can report the loss while applying with Form DS-11, but the State Department says cancellation this way can take several weeks; use the online process if immediate cancellation matters.
Contact the U.S. mission before traveling to a post
The State Department’s guidance for a passport lost abroad says to contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate and appear there in person to apply. Tell the consular staff your intended travel date and share your itinerary, especially if your departure is soon.

Confirm directly with the U.S. mission which post handles your case, how to schedule an appointment, and what local instructions apply. Brazil-specific appointment availability, consular districts, walk-in rules, hours, and issuance times are not established by the general guidance. Do not travel to a post assuming it accepts walk-ins.

- One passport photo measuring 2 x 2 inches (5 x 5 cm).
- Identification, such as a driver’s license or an expired passport.
- Evidence of U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate or a photocopy of the missing passport.
- Your airline or train itinerary.
- Form DS-11, completed with details about where and when the passport was lost or stolen.
- Passport fees, using the amount and payment method confirmed by the consular post.
If you filed a police report, bring a copy. The State Department says police reports are not mandatory under its general abroad guidance, though they may help confirm what happened. Provide a complete account of the loss on DS-11: if details are missing, the Department may pause the application and request Form DS-64. Staff will still do their best to help if you cannot produce every document.
Which passport might you receive?
The option depends on your travel urgency and what consular staff can issue in your case. The State Department’s general guidance, last updated September 25, 2025, describes these outcomes:

The Department says most replacement passports abroad are issued the next business day. That is general guidance, not a guarantee for Brazil, a specific post, or an individual application. Most embassies and consulates cannot issue passports on weekends or holidays; after-hours duty officers can assist in emergencies, including urgent travel and life-or-death situations. The State Department says replacement passports abroad generally cost the same as other passports, but the domestic fee chart is not a quote for an application in Brazil. The chart updated March 2026 lists a $150 file-search fee in its domestic application context; that amount is not established as the fee payable at a Brazilian consular post. Confirm the current local fee, accepted payment method, currency, and any applicable waiver directly with the post.

If you cannot show evidence of citizenship, the State Department says you may ask for a free file search to help obtain an emergency passport. Victims of serious crime or disaster who cannot pay may qualify for a free limited-validity emergency passport. These are general statements; ask the consular post whether either applies to your situation.
