DisplayPort 1.4a can carry 8K video at 60 Hz, but only when the source and display both support Display Stream Compression (DSC) and the rest of the connection is configured compatibly. VESA specifies 8K at 60 Hz with 24-bit color using 2:1 compression, or 30-bit color using 2.5:1 compression. The standard does not mean every DisplayPort 1.4a device—or every cable marketed for 8K—will deliver that mode.

Can DisplayPort 1.4a do 8K at 60 Hz?

Yes, conditionally. VESA’s FAQ says DisplayPort supports 8K at 60 Hz with DSC at either 24-bit color and a 2:1 compression ratio, or 30-bit color and a 2.5:1 ratio. Those are standard capabilities, not a guarantee that any particular computer, monitor, or cable supports the mode. Both endpoints and the full connection must support the necessary link and compression features. See VESA’s DisplayPort FAQ.

Resolution alone does not specify the whole video mode. Confirm the refresh rate, color depth, chroma format, and HDR support separately: an “8K” label does not establish that a device can deliver 8K at 60 Hz, at a particular color depth, or with HDR.

Why does 8K need DSC?

DisplayPort carries audio and video as a packet-based digital signal. More pixels, higher refresh rates, and deeper color increase the amount of data that must fit through the link. DSC compresses display data so that demanding video modes can fit within available bandwidth. VESA describes DSC as visually lossless: under typical viewing conditions, a typical observer would in most cases not notice image or video degradation compared with the uncompressed version. That description does not mean the signal is uncompressed. VESA says its DSC evaluation involved nearly 250,000 subjective image comparisons; this was image-quality testing, not a market-adoption statistic. Read VESA’s DSC overview.

VESA announced DisplayPort 1.4 on March 1, 2016. That release added support for DSC 1.2 transport, Forward Error Correction (FEC), HDR metadata transport, and expanded audio transport; VESA cited examples including 8Kp60 HDR deep color and 4Kp120 HDR deep color. The later 1.4a revision is an update to DisplayPort, notable for DSC 1.2b support, which VESA says is backward compatible with DSC 1.1. The 2016 announcement describes DisplayPort 1.4 features, not a 1.4a announcement. See VESA’s DisplayPort 1.4 announcement and the separate 2015 announcement for Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) 1.4a, which concerns built-in panels.

What do DisplayPort’s bandwidth figures mean?

VESA lists a maximum DP 1.4a link bandwidth of 32.4 Gbps and a maximum payload of 25.92 Gbps. The link figure is the encoded rate; the payload is the usable data rate after coding overhead. For HBR3 over four lanes, VESA gives 8.1 Gbps per lane and 32.4 Gbps total link bandwidth, yielding 25.92 Gbps of payload. DSC helps fit high-resolution modes into that capacity; it does not make every device or configuration capable of the same output. VESA documents the figures in its 2018 DP Tech Update presentation and 2017 HBR3 certification announcement.

Will a DP8K cable make my monitor run at 8K?

No. A DP8K-certified, HBR3-ready cable is a relevant cable category, but a cable alone cannot enable a video mode that the source or display does not support. Check the complete chain before buying or troubleshooting:

  • Source: Verify that the graphics card or other video source supports the target resolution, refresh rate, color depth, and DSC.
  • Display: Check the monitor’s specifications for the same mode and for DSC support.
  • Connection: Confirm the supported DisplayPort revision and link rate, lane allocation, and cable certification. Do not infer capabilities from connector shape or “8K” wording alone.
  • USB-C docks and adapters: If the connection uses DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C, lane allocation can affect the bandwidth available to video when lanes are also reserved for USB data.
  • Picture settings: Verify the requested refresh rate, color depth, chroma format, and HDR mode; not all combinations are established by an 8K resolution claim.

VESA’s 2018 presentation identifies a DP8K HBR3-ready cable specification. Treat certification as evidence about the cable category, not as proof that the entire system supports 8K at 60 Hz.

How does DisplayPort 1.4a compare with DP 2.0?

As historical context, VESA’s June 26, 2019 DP 2.0 announcement said the newer standard offered up to three times the data-bandwidth performance of DP 1.4a, with a maximum payload of 77.37 Gbps compared with DP 1.4a’s 25.92 Gbps. VESA positioned DP 2.0 for beyond-8K resolutions and higher refresh rates, while retaining DP 1.4a features such as DSC with FEC and HDR metadata. These figures describe the standards in that announcement, not a guarantee about any particular product. See VESA’s DP 2.0 announcement.
