For the nearest U.S. consular post in Brazil, check the U.S. Department of State’s Brazil Travel Advisory and its “Embassies and consulates” section. It lists the embassy, consulates, branch office, and consular agencies, along with public phone numbers and after-hours contacts. Confirm the live listing before calling or traveling because contact details and access procedures can change.

Find the nearest post and choose the right number

  1. Locate yourself. Identify your current city or state and compare it with the post locations below. “Nearest” means geographic proximity; it does not establish which post handles a particular service or your state.
  2. Check the live directory. Open the Brazil Travel Advisory and verify the current address and contact details. The official U.S. mission website is br.usembassy.gov.
  3. For routine matters, call the post’s main contact and check its website for current service instructions before visiting.
  4. For an urgent consular matter outside normal office hours, use the listed after-hours contact. Some branch offices and agencies refer callers to a principal post in another city.

The State Department directory’s contact information is reproduced below in +55 format. The directory sometimes shows the international dialing prefix “011” before country code 55; use the dialing format required by your carrier. Verify all details on the live page before relying on them.

What to do in an emergency

If there is an immediate threat to life or safety

Contact Brazilian emergency services first, then contact the appropriate U.S. post for consular assistance. Do not assume an embassy or consulate can dispatch local responders.

If you need urgent consular help

Call the listed after-hours number. Belo Horizonte and Manaus callers are routed to Brasilia; Fortaleza callers are referred to Recife; Salvador callers are referred to Rio de Janeiro. If you cannot reach an embassy or consulate, the State Department’s Help Abroad page lists 202-501-4444 for callers in all other locations; confirm the current number on that page before using it.

Common situations where U.S. citizens may seek help

USAGov’s emergency assistance abroad guidance identifies situations including a lost or stolen passport, a medical emergency, crime or arrest, a missing person, parental child abduction, a death abroad, being stranded and needing help returning to the United States, and a foreign crisis or natural disaster. Contact the post for guidance specific to your circumstances.

Check current information before you travel

The Brazil Travel Advisory was last updated August 6, 2026, and its history includes an August 31, 2026 entry at Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” citing crime and kidnapping or hostage-taking risk indicators. Advisory levels and safety information can change, so check the current advisory before travel.

The directory identifies post locations and contacts, but it does not establish a state-by-state consular district map. If your service depends on jurisdiction, consult the relevant service instructions or ask the post before making the trip.
