Closing a long can add selling pressure to that venue’s futures or perpetual contract and, in some conditions, help drive further liquidations. It can amplify a decline, but it does not by itself show what started a token’s price drop or how much of the spot-market move it explains.
What does long liquidation mean in crypto?
A long is a position that gains value when the underlying asset rises and loses value when it falls. In a leveraged futures or perpetual contract, a trader posts margin to control a larger position. As the market moves against the long, its unrealized losses reduce the collateral supporting it. If the position no longer meets the venue’s maintenance-margin requirement, the venue’s liquidation process takes over.
This is a risk-control action on a derivatives position. It does not mean the token issuer, network, or project has gone bankrupt. Binance describes liquidation in terms of collateral falling below maintenance margin; Bybit says its liquidation engine takes over when the mark price reaches the liquidation price. The precise process depends on the venue and contract. Binance’s futures liquidation rules and Bybit’s execution and liquidation FAQ describe their respective systems.
Why do crypto long positions get liquidated?
A falling underlying price creates losses for a long. Leverage makes the position more sensitive to an adverse move because the trader’s posted margin is smaller than the full exposure. But there is no single universal liquidation-price formula: the threshold depends on venue-specific calculations, maintenance-margin requirements and tiers, position size, collateral, and margin mode.

Collateral arrangements matter. With isolated margin, a position is generally supported by margin assigned to it; with cross or portfolio margin, other eligible account collateral may affect the risk calculation. The venue’s documentation determines which funds can be used and how a liquidation is handled. Do not treat a simple leverage-based estimate as a guaranteed exchange liquidation price.
How can long liquidations push token prices lower?
When a venue forcibly reduces a long, it generally creates sell-side activity in that derivatives market. If those orders push the contract lower, other leveraged longs may move closer to their own liquidation thresholds. Their forced reductions can add more selling, creating a feedback loop.

The loop is conditional, not automatic. Its size depends on factors such as order-book depth, venue design, collateral arrangements, and whether buyers absorb the flow. A liquidation can be a consequence of an earlier spot-market, macroeconomic, or other shock—and may then contribute to subsequent movement. Liquidation totals alone do not establish that liquidations initiated a decline or caused a particular share of a token’s spot-price change.
Which price triggers liquidation?
“Price” may mean the underlying spot index, the derivatives contract’s last traded price, or the venue’s mark price. Those values can differ. Binance says its futures liquidation price and unrealized P&L use mark price; its mark price combines funding information with a basket of spot prices. Bybit also uses mark price for liquidation, describing its perpetual-contract calculation as a global spot index plus a decaying funding-basis rate. The formulas and rules are venue-specific and may change. Bybit’s mark-price explanation describes its method.

This difference explains why a chart may appear not to have touched a displayed liquidation price, or why a stop order may not trigger before liquidation. If a chart or stop is keyed to last traded price while the liquidation engine uses mark price, the two triggers can behave differently. Bybit explicitly documents this mismatch. Binance also warns that volatile mark-price changes can make the actual liquidation level differ from the initially calculated level. Check the rules for the specific venue and contract rather than assuming all platforms use the same trigger.
How exchange liquidations differ from DeFi lending liquidations
In centralized futures or perpetual trading, the exchange’s liquidation system reduces or closes a trader’s derivatives position. In DeFi lending, a liquidator may repay some of a borrower’s debt and receive collateral, which can then be sold. Both mechanisms can affect prices, but their transactions and incentives differ; findings about one should not be presented as direct evidence about the other.

A March 2025 Bank of Canada staff paper analyzes Ethereum lending liquidations and reports smaller price drops for auction-based mechanisms in its analysis. The OECD’s 2022 report discusses research finding lasting price impact when arbitrageurs sell collateral obtained through DeFi loan liquidations. These findings show that liquidation design can influence market impact in the settings studied; they do not quantify the effect of centralized futures long liquidations on token prices. See the Bank of Canada paper and the OECD report.

A liquidation feed is a measurement with a defined scope, not a complete explanation of a market move. Before interpreting a reported total, identify:

- Venue and contract: which exchange and whether the figures cover futures, perpetuals, or another product.
- Observation window: the exact time period represented.
- What is counted: whether a value represents notional position size, realized close-outs, or another measure.
- Coverage: which venues and instruments the feed includes and whether it captures all forms of forced or voluntary position reduction.
A 2021 working paper on BitMEX Bitcoin perpetual futures reported daily forced liquidations equal to 3.51% of outstanding futures for long positions and 1.89% for short positions in its study sample. Those are study-specific estimates, not a current rate, a market-wide benchmark, or a prediction. The reviewed sources do not establish a representative current statistic for the share of token price moves caused by long liquidations. A liquidation total should not be mistaken for spot-market sell volume.
How to compare liquidation rules across venues
If you are assessing a particular position or comparing exchanges, inspect the relevant contract documentation for these differences:
- Trigger reference: whether liquidation uses mark price, index price, or last traded price.
- Maintenance margin: how requirements change with position size or margin tier.
- Collateral and margin mode: whether the position is isolated, cross-margined, or under portfolio margin, and which collateral can support it.
- Liquidation handling: whether the venue reduces a position in stages or closes it, and how it routes or handles orders.
- Loss allocation: what insurance-fund or other loss-allocation mechanism applies if the process does not cover losses.
Binance and Bybit illustrate why these mechanics should be checked venue by venue; their rules are not interchangeable. Use the documentation for the exact contract because exchange procedures can change.
