NASA observations and modeling indicate that the permanently shadowed part of Mare Tranquillitatis pit stays near 17 °C (63 °F). Rock around a pit or a subsurface void could also block some radiation and micrometeorites, but the sources available do not establish how much radiation a crew would avoid at any particular site.
What a lunar “cave” means
Many proposed lunar caves are possible lava tubes inferred from surface pits. A pit can form when a lava-tube roof collapses, potentially exposing an underground void; seeing a pit from orbit does not prove that a connected, traversable cave lies beneath it. NASA has cautioned that remote observations alone cannot establish a cave’s existence with complete certainty.
NASA reported more than 200 lunar pits and about 16 considered probable collapsed lava tubes in 2022. The second figure is an estimate, not a count of confirmed caves or astronaut-ready shelters. A mapped pit, an inferred cavity, an explored subsurface space and a structurally qualified habitat are different levels of evidence.
How much could a pit or cave moderate temperature?
The strongest example: Mare Tranquillitatis pit
Using temperature observations from the Diviner instrument aboard NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and thermophysical modeling, Horvath and colleagues found that the permanently shadowed reaches of Mare Tranquillitatis pit are around 17 °C (63 °F). NASA contrasts this with typical lunar surface extremes of about 127 °C (260 °F) in daytime and −173 °C (−280 °F) at night. The shadowed pit environment is therefore far more stable than the exposed surface.

The result applies to the pit’s shadowed region, not uniformly to every part of the feature. Sunlit locations can become very hot. The study also found elevated nighttime thermal emission—about 100 K above nearby terrain—for Mare Tranquillitatis and Mare Ingenii pits; that observation is not the same as establishing a comfortable temperature everywhere inside either pit.
A cave temperature is still a model-based possibility
The paper modeled a potential cave extending from the Mare Tranquillitatis pit and estimated less than 1 °C of temperature variation over a lunar day. That figure is an inference about a hypothesized cave, not an in-cave measurement. It depends on a connected subsurface space being present and on the modeled conditions applying there; it should not be generalized to all lunar caves.

In its summary of the findings, NASA LRO Project Scientist Noah Petro said the stable thermal environment helps researchers understand these features and the prospect of exploring them. It is evidence of scientific interest, not confirmation that a habitat can be installed there.
Could lunar caves shield astronauts from radiation and micrometeorites?
Rock overhead and terrain between a crew and an exposed opening could intercept some incoming radiation and small impactors. How much protection a particular location offers would depend on factors such as the thickness and shape of the overlying rock, the opening’s geometry and how far inside the crew is positioned.

The sources reviewed here describe this as a potential benefit, but they do not provide a validated, site-specific radiation dose reduction for a crew. They therefore do not support a percentage reduction or a claim of zero radiation exposure. A NASA technical presentation says the effectiveness of candidate features needs assessment using modern radiation-transport methods.
Robert Wagner of Arizona State University described a habitat several dozen meters back under an overhang as potentially offering a very safe location, with protection from radiation and micrometeorites among its possible advantages. That was Wagner’s 2014 assessment of a proposed location—not a measured performance result from an occupied lunar habitat.

Why a promising shelter is not yet a usable base
Even if a pit opens into a useful void, establishing a habitat there would require more than identifying favorable temperature or shielding. NASA technical material highlights practical mission challenges:
- Confirming that a subsurface cavity exists, and determining its shape and structural stability.
- Finding an entrance that is safe to approach and traversing the terrain around it.
- Landing near the feature without taking unacceptable landing risks, then moving crew and habitat equipment from the landing site to the underground location.
- Providing power and handling heat and radiation-management needs in an enclosed space.
- Maintaining communications and a workable route for emergency egress.
A 2025 NASA report described a proof-of-principle seismic method tested above terrestrial lava tubes and caves. Researchers generated signals with a hammer and used detectors to reveal underground voids. NASA presented the approach as a possible future way to search for shelter on the Moon and Mars, not as a completed lunar cave survey.
