The right fix depends on whether you’re using a PS4 or PS5 and a disc or digital copy. Work through the matching checks below; the official guidance supports general PlayStation troubleshooting, not a single RDR2-specific fix.
First, identify your console, copy and symptom
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a PS4 game from Rockstar Games that you can play on PS5 through backward compatibility. It is not a native PS5 edition. PlayStation notes, “Although this game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent.” A system software update may be needed for compatibility. PlayStation’s RDR2 product page lists the platform and compatibility note.

- Console: PS4 or PS5? On PS5, is the game installed on the console or USB extended storage?
- Copy: Are you inserting a disc or launching a digital download?
- Symptom: Does it fail immediately, display a code or padlock, or crash after loading?
- Other games: Do other games start? If you have a disc copy, does the console read other supported discs?
These distinctions help separate access and installation problems from disc-reading or broader console issues.
If you see a padlock or access message
A padlock can indicate that the console cannot verify your right to play the game. Check account access before deleting or reinstalling anything.

- Sign in to the account that purchased the digital copy, then check that the transaction completed.
- If your access comes through PlayStation Plus, confirm the subscription is active and the game is still available to that account.
- If another account owns the game, check the console-sharing arrangement. On PS5, review Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. On PS4, check the owner account’s primary PS4 activation.
- Restore licenses: on PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses; on PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
PlayStation’s game-start troubleshooting guide covers licenses and access checks. Don’t repurchase the game until you have verified which account owns it and whether its access is valid.
If you’re using a disc
- Eject the disc and check that it is seated and inserted correctly for your console.
- Inspect the readable surface for dirt or fingerprints. If it needs cleaning, use a soft, clean cloth. Avoid abrasive materials and unverified cleaning fluids.
- Try another supported game disc or movie disc. If other discs work but RDR2 does not, the game disc may be the issue. If several discs fail, that points toward a wider disc-reading problem, but it does not by itself establish a hardware fault.
PlayStation’s PS5 disc troubleshooting guide recommends cleaning with a soft, clean cloth and testing another disc. You can use a clean cloth you already have; buying a special cloth is not required.

If the digital game or installed data won’t start
Try the less disruptive steps first. Reinstalling can require a large download and take time, so check your connection and available storage before you begin.
- Fully restart the console, then try starting the game again.
- Restore licenses using the console-specific menu path above.
- Install any available PlayStation system software update, then test the game.
- If the game is installed on USB extended storage on PS5, move it to the console’s internal storage and try again.
- If the problem continues, delete the game and download or install it again. A wired network connection may help if your connection is unstable.

If ordinary steps fail, use Safe Mode cautiously
Safe Mode starts the console with basic functions and offers database troubleshooting options. These options are later steps, not the first response to a single failed launch.
- PS5: “Clear Cache and Rebuild Database” contains separate cache-clearing and database-rebuilding actions.
- PS4: “Rebuild Database” scans the drive and creates a new content database.
Some Safe Mode choices erase data. Back up important data first, and use PlayStation’s exact console-specific instructions rather than selecting Reset, Initialize or reinstall-system-software options casually. See PlayStation’s Safe Mode guide for PS5 and PS4.

When to contact PlayStation Support
If RDR2 still will not start, note the exact error code or message, your console model, whether the copy is disc or digital, what happens when you launch it, and the steps that reproduce the problem. A screenshot or video can also help. PlayStation’s game-start guide provides a support route, and PlayStation Repairs is the official route for unresolved console problems.
If you receive an error code, follow the instructions for that exact code instead of assuming it is unique to RDR2. For example, PlayStation’s CE-41839-5 guidance is general PS4 application-error advice, not evidence that this code is specific to Red Dead Redemption 2. Some recovery steps, such as initialization, can erase data.
