There is no single best browser for every Windows user. Start with Microsoft Edge, which comes with Windows, then compare alternatives such as Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, Tor Browser, and Pale Moon against your needs for website and extension compatibility, privacy controls, resource use, features, and Windows support. The available evidence identifies these as options, not a tested or ranked top ten.

How to choose a Windows browser

Focus on the differences that affect your daily browsing rather than relying on a universal ranking. A current overview identifies compatibility, privacy, resource use, and features as useful comparison points, but does not provide independent test results for the browsers named here (overview of Windows browsers).

  • Website and extension compatibility: Check whether the sites and add-ons you depend on work in the browser you are considering.
  • Privacy controls: Review each browser’s own current documentation to understand what controls it offers and how they work.
  • Resource use: If performance or memory use is a concern, look for comparable, independent tests rather than assuming one browser is faster.
  • Features: Decide which built-in tools matter to you, then confirm their availability in the browser’s current documentation.
  • Windows support: Confirm that the browser supports your Windows version, particularly if you use an older release or S mode.

Windows browsers to consider

The options below are candidates for comparison, not a ranked list. The available overview names these browsers for Windows but does not substantiate a head-to-head feature, privacy, speed, or resource-use comparison.

Browser What the available evidence establishes
Microsoft Edge Included with Windows; Microsoft recommends it for the Windows browsing experience.
Google Chrome Named as a Windows browser option; comparative features and performance are not established here.
Mozilla Firefox Named as an alternative to Edge; Mozilla says it is no longer supported on Windows 8.1 and earlier.
Brave Named as a Windows browser option; comparative features and performance are not established here.
Opera Named as a Windows browser option; comparative features and performance are not established here.
Vivaldi Named as a Windows browser option; comparative features and performance are not established here.
Tor Browser Named as a Windows browser option; comparative features and performance are not established here.
Pale Moon Named as a Windows browser option; comparative features and performance are not established here.

Microsoft Edge

Edge is a convenient starting point because Microsoft says it is included with Windows and recommends it for browsing on Windows (Microsoft’s Edge guidance). That is Microsoft’s recommendation, not evidence that Edge is the fastest or best choice for every user.

Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox

Chrome and Firefox are alternatives to consider alongside Edge. Mozilla specifically identifies Firefox as an Edge alternative, but says Firefox is no longer supported on Windows 8.1 and earlier. If you use one of those older systems, check Mozilla’s compatibility guidance before choosing it (Mozilla’s Firefox compatibility guidance).

Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, Tor Browser, and Pale Moon

A current Windows-browser overview also names Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, Tor Browser, and Pale Moon. The available evidence does not establish comparative rankings or detailed feature claims for these browsers, so evaluate them against your own requirements and confirm current Windows compatibility with each browser’s official documentation.

What about Internet Explorer?

Do not treat Internet Explorer as a supported everyday browser: Microsoft says its security updates and technical support ended on June 15, 2022 (Microsoft’s Internet Explorer lifecycle information). If you need it for a legacy workflow, check the software provider’s and your organization’s guidance for a supported way to handle that requirement.

Can you change your default browser in Windows 10 S mode?

S mode can limit default-browser choices. Microsoft’s FAQ addresses whether Chrome or Firefox can be set as the default while using Windows 10 in S mode; check its instructions for the rules that apply to your device before switching or changing settings (Microsoft’s Windows 10 S mode FAQ).

Is one browser fastest or most private?

The available evidence does not substantiate a speed benchmark, privacy ranking, or resource-use comparison for these browsers. Avoid treating an unqualified “fastest” or “most private” label as a measured result. For a decision that depends on those qualities, compare current documentation and independent tests that use comparable methods and clearly state their conditions.

Choosing a browser for your PC

  1. Check your Windows version and any restrictions, including S mode.
  2. Start with Edge if you want the browser included with Windows; otherwise shortlist browsers that support your system.
  3. Check that your essential sites and extensions work in each candidate.
  4. Compare the privacy controls and built-in features you actually intend to use, using current browser documentation.
  5. If resource use or speed is decisive, consult comparable independent tests rather than relying on a universal ranking.
