If your iPhone shows “No Service” or “Searching,” it is not connected to a cellular network. “SOS” or “SOS only” means it cannot connect to its own network, though emergency calls through other carriers may be possible in Australia, Canada, and the United States. Carrier settings can improve network connectivity and add support for features such as 5G or Wi‑Fi Calling, but an update is not a cure for every service problem.

What “No Service,” “Searching,” and “SOS” mean

Apple defines “No Service” and “Searching” as a status in which the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network. With “SOS” or “SOS only,” the phone is disconnected from its own cellular network. In Australia, Canada, and the United States, Apple says emergency calls through other carrier networks may still be possible; SOS is not ordinary cellular service. Apple’s status-message and troubleshooting guide describes these states.

Why cellular service can disappear

There is no single cause established by the status message alone. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance covers several possibilities, and does not rank them by likelihood:

  • Coverage or outage: The location may lack coverage, or the carrier may have a local service interruption.
  • Account or carrier restriction: The account may not be active or in good standing, the plan may not be set up correctly, or the device may be blocked or barred. Only the carrier can access and manage account details.
  • Line or SIM/eSIM setup: A line may be switched off, an eSIM may not be set up, or a physical SIM may be damaged, ill-fitting, or unsuitable after being moved from another device.
  • Software or carrier configuration: An iOS update or carrier-settings update may be needed. That is one possibility, not proof that outdated settings caused the loss.
  • Travel or registration requirements: Roaming may need to be configured for the relevant line. An iPhone purchased outside the country or region may also be subject to local IMEI-registration requirements.
  • Possible hardware issue: Apple says device service may be needed if the carrier rules out account and network problems and hardware is suspected.

What carrier settings do

Carrier settings are carrier-provided network and configuration information. Apple says updates can improve cellular network connectivity and performance, and may add support for features such as 5G or Wi‑Fi Calling. They are specific to carrier service; their availability or installation does not establish that they are the reason an iPhone lost service. Apple’s explanation is in Manually update carrier settings on your iPhone or iPad.

Try these checks in order

  1. Reconnect to the network: If service should be available where you are, open Control Center or Settings and turn Airplane Mode on. Wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off. If the iPhone does not reconnect, restart it. These steps may restore a connection but are not guaranteed to do so.
  2. Check that the intended line is enabled: On a Dual SIM iPhone, verify the line you want to use is switched on. If the line is missing, contact the carrier about eSIM setup or reinsert the physical SIM. If the SIM is damaged, does not fit its tray, or was moved from another device, ask the carrier for a replacement.
  3. Check roaming when traveling: For international travel, verify cellular data and Data Roaming for the relevant line. The available options and labels can vary with the iPhone’s configuration.
  4. Install available software and carrier updates: Check for an iOS update, then connect to Wi‑Fi or cellular and open Settings > General > About. If a carrier-settings prompt appears, follow it. A new SIM or eSIM may require settings for the new carrier. Apple says the installed carrier-settings version appears next to Carrier; tap the version to see additional carrier information. Ask the carrier whether that version is current.
  5. Ask the carrier to check service and the device: Have it verify account standing, coverage and outages, restrictions or blocks, plan setup, SIM replacement needs, and—if relevant—local IMEI-registration requirements.

What to expect from a carrier-settings update

Apple says available carrier-settings updates normally prompt you to install them. Installation takes less than one minute, and the device can still be used. If the carrier releases a mandatory update, Apple says the system downloads and installs it and shows an OK button instead of an Update button. The update can supply revised carrier information or enable supported features; it does not resolve causes such as an outage, inactive account, disabled line, or hardware fault by itself.

When to contact the carrier or Apple

Contact the carrier for account status, coverage and outages, service restrictions, plan configuration, SIM or eSIM setup, and SIM replacement. If the carrier confirms there is no account or network problem but hardware is suspected, Apple says service may be necessary. On iPhone models running iOS 18 or later, Apple says the Support app can run additional diagnostics that may help identify the source of a device issue. These checks help narrow the problem; the status message alone cannot identify its cause.
