Before buying a boat with connected electronics, have the seller demonstrate every important feature on a sea trial, confirm that the exact devices work together, and arrange an independent survey. A screen powering on is not proof that navigation, communications, sensors, or remote features work as advertised.

Start with an equipment inventory

Ask the seller to identify everything included: chartplotters and other displays, instruments, VHF radios, AIS units, sensors, network components, apps, and remote-control features. Record each item’s brand, exact model, serial number, approximate age, and available manuals. Ask which charts, subscriptions, accessories, or services are included and whether they can transfer to you.

Discover Boating recommends listing the included electronics and their serial numbers in the purchase agreement. Its used-boat buying guidance also recommends checking systems and taking a sufficiently long ride to warm the engine.

Demonstrate the features during a sea trial

Ask the seller to operate the equipment, not just turn it on. Test the functions you expect to use, including navigation, instrument readings, communications, audio, lights, and any advertised connected or remote feature. Check that information appears on the displays where you expect it.

Repeat relevant checks while underway. For app- or network-dependent features, ask what still works without phone signal, marina Wi-Fi, or an active subscription. There is no universal test for every cloud-, cellular-, satellite-, or app-dependent system; consult the manuals for the exact equipment and have a marine-electronics technician assess features material to your decision. BoatUS’s boat evaluation checklist recommends checking electronics and instrumentation and conducting a sea trial.

Confirm that the electronics work together

Ask which devices exchange data, then have the seller show that data on each relevant display. Verify compatibility against the manufacturers’ documentation for the exact models; a shared brand, similar appearance, or connector that fits is not enough to establish compatibility.

Marine multifunction displays can have system-specific requirements. BoatUS notes that ordinary home or office cables may not have waterproofed connectors or marine IP ratings. Use the manufacturer-specified marine cables and parts, installed as directed. See BoatUS’s guidance on adding a second electronics station.

Check the radio, AIS, and antennas

Identify the installed VHF and AIS equipment. Ask the seller to demonstrate radio transmission and reception and, where applicable, AIS operation. A powered-on AIS display alone does not establish that the system is working correctly.

Garmin 010-02366-61 GPSMAP 943xsv SideVü
  • Ultra high-definition scanning sonar
  • Panoptix sonar support
  • Pre-loaded mapping
  • Improved display optics

AIS reception and radio performance can be affected by antenna placement and nearby electrical or electronic equipment. Ask about outages, interference, and installation history; have a qualified marine-electronics technician assess concerns on the actual boat. BoatUS explains installation and interference considerations in its AIS overview. A VHF is important for communicating with other boats and marine rescue organizations, but the presence of an installed radio does not prove it works or meet every boat’s needs. Match the equipment to the vessel and applicable local requirements; see BoatUS’s used-boat equipment guidance.

Ask for software, programming, and service history

Ask when chartplotter software was last updated and whether the owner can show update records. Confirm that VHF programming, including the vessel’s MMSI where applicable, is correct. BoatUS’s spring commissioning guidance recommends updating chartplotter software and checking VHF operation and MMSI programming.

Have power and wiring inspected

Ask the surveyor to inspect accessible batteries and wiring and note corrosion, loose connections, damage, or undocumented modifications. Where the surveyor or technician considers it appropriate, test the electronics with the engine running and other electrical loads operating. BoatUS includes battery, wiring, and electronics checks in its buyer checklist and survey guidance.

Arrange an independent survey and specialist checks

Use a competent marine surveyor after an accepted offer, and allow time to review the report and negotiate material findings. The surveyor works for you and can inspect systems, but a survey is not a repair diagnosis: surveyors are not hired to troubleshoot or fix equipment. Ask that batteries, wiring, electronics, and appliances be started or tested where practical, and make sure the seller provides access. Obtain repair estimates from qualified professionals for faults that matter to the purchase.

Put the equipment and promises in writing

List included electronics and serial numbers in the signed purchase agreement. Record any promised repairs, accessories, charts, or subscription transfers there as well; do not rely on a verbal assurance that an item or service comes with the boat.

Compare boats by what works, not just what is installed

When comparing vessels, consider the features demonstrated in operation, device compatibility and the documented upgrade path, equipment condition and records, dependence on connectivity or subscriptions, and repair or replacement costs estimated by a qualified professional. These details are specific to the boat and its installed equipment; do not assume that a connected feature will work in every location or that a particular system will be inexpensive to maintain.

BoatUS’s checklist includes a preliminary 1-to-5 rating method, but that score is an organizing aid—not evidence that a boat meeting a certain rating is safe or free of defects. The checklist itself is not a substitute for a competent surveyor or engine mechanic. See the BoatUS checklist and its printable buyer’s guide.
