Choose a container by the amount and form of coffee you actually store, then use the manufacturer’s stated bean capacity—not liters alone—to check the fit. For example, OXO says its 1.6 L Steel Coffee POP fits a standard 450 g bag, while Fellow lists its Atmos sizes by bean weight and notes that roast affects capacity. Those are product-specific claims, not a universal volume-to-weight conversion.
Start with the amount you store at one time
- Read or weigh the quantity. Use the weight on the bag, or weigh the beans if you are combining coffee from several bags.
- Look for a maker-stated bean capacity. Compare that figure with your usual quantity. A container’s liter rating by itself does not tell you exactly how much coffee will fit.
- Allow for the coffee and container combination. Bean characteristics and roast can affect fit. Follow any roast-specific capacity limits the manufacturer gives.
For a variable supply, avoid assuming that one large jar is always best. Keeping coffee in a resealable original bag, using more than one appropriately sized container, or storing bulk separately from the daily amount can be more practical.
Use product capacities as examples, not conversion rules

The different examples are why a general grams-per-liter rule is unreliable: use the capacity published for the particular container and coffee type.
Match the container to beans, grounds, and your storage spot
Whole beans or ground coffee
Check the maker’s guidance before storing grounds. Fellow says fine grounds may clog the Atmos intake valve and recommends that canister for whole beans only. OXO says its 1.6 L Steel Coffee POP is suitable for beans or grounds.

Counter or cupboard
If the container will sit in the open, light shielding may matter; OXO describes its tinted vessel as shielding flavor from light. A cool, dry, dark cupboard is another straightforward place to keep coffee. Meleno advises keeping daily-use coffee closed, dry, cool, and away from direct light.
Seal and upkeep
OXO describes the Steel Coffee POP’s press-button lid as airtight. Fellow says the manual Atmos lid needs to be twisted every 4–5 days to maintain a vacuum seal. These are different mechanisms and manufacturer instructions, not evidence from a direct comparative test.

Decide whether you need a separate container
A canister is optional if the original coffee bag is barrier-style, resealable, and still closes properly. Meleno says such a bag can remain the everyday container; a separate vessel is useful when the bag no longer seals well or when you want a smaller amount ready for daily use.
For a larger bulk supply, the Australian SITHFAB005 learning guide describes keeping the main quantity sealed and transferring a smaller active amount to a daily container. This avoids opening the full supply every time you make coffee.

Interpret freshness advice as guidance, not a guarantee
Storage advice varies by source and should not be mistaken for a guaranteed freshness period. PhilMech Technical Bulletin No. 9 says opened whole beans exposed to the environment should not be kept for more than a week. The Australian SITHFAB005 Learning Guide, Version 2020.1, advises buying quantities that last one to two weeks and says whole beans are ideally consumed within a month of roasting; its nearby freshness discussion cites older secondary-source material. These are source-specific recommendations, not a universal rule for every coffee or storage setup.
For everyday handling, keep the active supply closed between uses and store it away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Choose the container size around the amount you can use while following the storage guidance that applies to your coffee.
